Cold Case Cast Catch-up – October 2015

tracie_thoms_001_430x180

I know we are on the eve of Halloween but don’t be afraid this is just our CCCC-up (Cold Case Cast Catch-up) round up for October 2015.  If there is significant news about the on-going career of the major players in the TV that was lead by Kathryn we bring it to you each month.

Let’s go by police rank in descending order this month.

John Finn (John Stillman on CC) is down to appear in a movie due for release next year.  It is called Gifted and is about a man bringing up his young niece after her mother (his sister) dies.  The substitute father is in a custody battle over the girl with his mother.  It is not clear at this stage how John’s character fits in.  Aubrey Highsmith does not share a surname with any of the main characters so perhaps we are looking at a neighbour or someone in the legal team dealing with the custody.  Chris Evans (the star of Captain America, not the soon-to-be Top Gear host), Lindsay Duncan (The Honourable Woman), Octavia Spencer (The Help) and Jenny Slate (Married) are among the stars.

The long running process of production and release of the film Death Valley is something we’ve covered several times here on a CCCC-up.  It looks like it was finally became available to the public last week.  Jeremy Ratchford (Nick Vera in CC) has a small role (I think) as a police office as I showed all the way back in September 2013!  Katrina Law (Arrow), Lochlyn Munro (True Justice), Victoria Pratt (Mutant X), Kelly Hu (Arrow) all star in the tale of a group of people, strangers apparently, travelling across the eponymous desert in California when they hit someone with their car.  Hilarity ensues, or maybe not.

As usual Ms Tracie Thoms (Kat Miller on CC) has decided to out-do everyone else.  She’s filmed something called The California No.  Not sure what it is at this time, it could be a TV show or web series, but the name is a reference to a method that Californians have of avoiding awkward questions.  Rather than just saying ‘no’ they do nothing.  As well that Tracie’s set to star in a movie presumably due out in a year’s time.  I presume that because it is called A New York Christmas, is said to be currently in post-production, and has a date of 2016.  It’s hardly likely to be a big draw in the summer so we’ll assume next autum/fall at the earliest.  The film is a multi-stranded story set in a hotel just because Xmas.  Jaime Ray Newman (Eureka), Ross McCall (White Collar), Jamie Bamber (NCIS), and Linda Park (Star Trek: Enterprise) star.  Also, Tracie returned to singing for the first time in a while at a charity event for the National Breast Cancer Coalition.

Bone Tomahawk HD Screencaps

screencaps_008Most of the information suggested that Bone Tomahawk would be released in US cinemas on Friday, and it would be available via VOD platforms at the same time.

Last week a review on the JoBlo website decried the lack of a cinema release for a film the writer felt needed to be seen on the big screen.

The truth appears to be somewhere in between.

Bone Tomahawk got a very limited theatrical release, possibly on only a dozen or so screens.  Box office numbers have proved difficult to find but there are only so many people that can watch a film at less than 20 cinemas in a few days.  It is not uncommon for a film to screened just once in a particular area to make it count as a cinema release and therefore eligible for awards and such.

A niche film with a lot of brutal violence is always going to be a tough sell to large audiences outside of the special festivals, which Bone Tomahawk has definitely been doing.  The news so far though is that the film has scored well in reviews.  The most common complaints are the length (it’s 132 minutes) and the slow pace in the first half.  That may be deliberate to make the steady ramping up of the pace and the ending more significant.

screencaps_011But what of Kathryn’s role?  I can confirm that she is in two short scenes.  The film script that is floating around that there Internet is accurate.

The first establishes that Sheriff Hunt (Kurt Russell) as a caring type.  His wife Lorna (Kathryn) is not in good health but he’s tried to make her feel better the night before (nudge, nudge, wink, wink, say no more, a nod’s as good a wink to a blind bat etc.).  The tender scene is interrupted by a visitor letting the Sheriff know of a problem in the town.

screencaps_018Ten minutes later (in the film) the couple are together in their house again.  The Sheriff is preparing to leave on the rescue mission and Lorna is helping but is clearly very concerned about her husband’s safety.

Neither scene is vital to the plot.  Plenty would have cut them both due to the pacing issue.  However, they do ground the character.  He’s not a super hero.  He’s husband as well as a man who takes the duties that go with the Sheriff’s badge very seriously.  Kathryn does a fine job of course.  That all sounds like Kathryn in Moneyball, but without cutting.

screencaps_038If anyone would like to write a full review of Bone Tomahawk for KM UK then please let me know.  I’d love to publish your thoughts.

I’ve put together a small collection of HD screencaps of Kathryn in Bone Tomahawk.  They are in the Gallery now.

Thanks to horror film fan Fate815 for finding a short clip of one of Kathryn’s scenes on YouTube for you all to see.

Bone Tomahawk Starts Swinging Today

poster_002_1500x2215It has been just over a year since news broke that after a prolonged pre-production period Bone Tomahawk started actual production.

The short filming schedule, very small budget, and limited post-production special effects has meant quite a short turn around.  Certainly quicker than much Hollywood fare.

Premièring a month ago at Fantastic Fest and screening at a number of other festivals since (with plenty more to come), Bone Tomahawk will be released in US cinemas and via VOD services today (Friday, 23rd October).

The horror-filled western stars Kurt Russell (Death Proof) as Sheriff Hunt, who, along with Patrick Wilson (Fargo), Matthew Fox (Lost) and Richard Jenkins (Let Me In), set out to rescue Lili Simmons (Banshee) from a band of “cannibalistic cave dwellers”.

David Arquette (Scream), Sean Young (Blade Runner), Sid Haig (Jackie Brown), Michael Parè (The Lincoln Lawyer), and James Tolkan (Top Gun) also star.

Kathryn has a small role as Lorna Hunt, wife to Kurt’s Franklin.

UK cinema goers will have to wait until December the 11th.

One Thing Leeds To Another For Bone Tomahawk

leeds_film_festival_300x300.jpgThey’re coming thick and fast at the moment.

That rather enigmatic log on the right is the symbol used by the Leeds International Film Festival.

The city of Leeds is in the self-styled ‘god’s own country’ county of Yorkshire in the north of England.

Hundreds of screenings, over a dozen venues, all packed in to a full two week long festival.  The programme is broken down to five sections.  Bone Tomahawk falls under the one titled ‘Fanomenon’ and will be shown as part of a marathon event called ‘Night Of The Dead XV’.  It starts, appropriately enough, on Friday the 13th of November at 9pm.  The curtain rises on Bone Tomahawk at around 1am on Saturday morning.  But they’re only half-way done!  The latest horror film from New Zealand, Deathgasm, ends the night with the credits rolling at nearly 7am.  I’m not sure I’d be up for that.  Some of us have on the Monday after!

Looks like tickets are only available for the whole night event, so are more expensive than they would be for just an individual screening.

You want to know where to find more info?  Let me ‘Leeds’ you to it: official website.

Bone Tomahawk Gets Off Scot (Not) Free

inverness_film_festival_1160x2000More film festival news means Bone Tomahawk will be continuing to stride the globe like a colossus into November.

The award winning film has more US screenings this weekend in Telluride, Colorado.

It’s already been shown in England as part of the BFI London Film Festival.  We know the horror western will be in Wales for the Abertoir Film Festival in mid-November and over the water to the Republic Of Ireland and the Cork Film Festival just before that.

How about the other English border?

We’ve now got news that that’ll be covered in early November when Bone Tomahawk jumps Hadrian’s Wall on its way to Inverness.

As part of the schedule of the Inverness Film Festival it can claim to be the Scottish première and the most northerly screening so far.

The Eden Court theatre will be playing host to the movie at 8:30pm on Thursday the 5th of November.

At the heart of Inverness, on bank of the river Ness (which joins the famous Loch Ness and Beauly Firth), Eden Court is approaching its 40th year.  The IFF is 13 this year.

But where can you find out more about this event?  I hear you ask.  How about the official website.
