Cold Case Cast Catch-up – January 2016

It’s still January, right? For the next few paragraphs lets pretend that it is to cover for the fact that I managed not to post this before the end of January. It is an easy mistake to make as it’s one of those tricky 31-day long months

There is not much to say about the on-going careers of the Cold Case cast in January’s (ahem) KM UK CCCC-up. Xmas, New Year and run up towards pilot season may have played a part in that.

If it weren’t for Tracie Thoms (Kat Miller in CC) I’d not be posting anything at all so I’ll start (and end) with her.

The Sundance Film Festival première of movie Tracie is starring in called Equity, as mentioned last month (it is still January, remember…) happened a few days ago. Equity is a Wall Street-set drama. The twist on the normal run of things, not that it should be considered a twist at all these days, is that the principal characters are women. Anna Gunn (Breaking Bad) leads the cast along with Sarah Megan Thomas (also a producer), Alysia Reiner (Orange Is The New Black), James Purefoy (token male ), and Carrie Preston (True Blood), amongst many others. The film was also written and directed by women, Amy Fox and Meera Meron respectively.

It was announced less than a week ago that Sony Pictures Classic had bought the global rights to distribute Equity. Beyond the recent première no release dates have been announced yet.

The web series Send Me, which Tracie leads, is on for its release in February (next month…) as mentioned in the December 2015 CCCC-up. The 4th is the planned date, with preview material appearing on the project’s YouTube channel on the 1st of Feb. Find all the info about the series, which centres around Gwen (Tracie) who has the ability to send people back to the time of slavery, on its website here.

Wild West Women On The WWW

A lot has been said recently, and rightly so, about equality in movies. They should reflect the times and the audience. Of course, a film with a historical setting also needs to accurately portray its period whilst not glorifying the less progressive aspects for a modern viewership.

In most of the commentary on Bone Tomahawk the women of the piece only normally get scant mention as their roles are quite small. Lili Simmons (Banshee) in her key part as the kidnapped wife of one of the main protagonists has no doubt had the lion’s share of what little has been said.

So, it was nice to see in a recent review of Bone Tomahawk titled The Best Western You Haven’t Seen that British author Rob Wickings made special mention of the ladies in a comparison to other recent cinematic releases The Hateful Eight and The Revenant.

Rob notes that The Hateful Eight‘s female lead is not exactly treated well and The Revenant has only one line spoken by a woman during a brief, and hardly pleasant, appearance. In terms of the actresses on-screen time Bone Tomahawk may not out do them but the author clearly feels they are much more rounded and realistic portrayals. Kathryn as Lorna the wife of Kurt Russell’s Sheriff Hunt gets a mention in his article beyond the usual list of credits. As Rob says:

They are tough, smart women.

Sean Young is the third notable female cast member, thereby outdoing both The Revenant and The Hateful Eight combined

Bone Tomahawk Heads For The Low Country

After the dizzying heights of eastern France yesterday today we are heading both North and down.

The distinguished looking gentleman you see on the right is the logo/mascot of the International Film Festival Rotterdam. He’s a tiger, apparently loosely based on the MGM film studio’s iconic roaring lion, and is used to represent the event in all its forms. The festival is held in the city of Rotterham in South Holland, the Netherlands, and this will be its 45th year.

S. Craig Zahler’s Horror western Bone Tomahawk is having its national première on Friday (29th) at the Pathé Schouwburgplein cinema starting at 12:30pm. Saturday night sees a repeat screening a the same venue. An evening showing at the Cinerama Filmtheater on Sunday and the following Friday (5th Feb, yes it is nearly February already!) for final 19:15 start at the Oude Luxor Theater.

Bone Tomahawk Heads For The Hills (Of France)

You’ll have to forgive me up front because I’m bound to make a hash of this one. No doubt I’ll amuse and offend a whole country in one post with my attempts to understand a language I very clearly don’t.

It’s been a while since we’ve hit the festival circuit here on KM UK and it is already late January 2016. We have a bit of catching up to do.

On Wednesday (27th Jan 2017) the Festival International du Film Fantastique de Gérardmer starts. I think we can work out most of that without reaching for the French-English dictionary but suffice to say it is a sci-fi and horror film festival held in France.

Gérardmer is a community in the far East of France, around 35 miles (that’s approx. 60km for locals) from the borders with both Germany and Switzerland. Up in the mountains it is on the shores of Lac de Gérardmer and looks like a very beautiful part of the world (hopefully that buys me a bit of goodwill ).

Bone Tomahawk is one of four films premièring at the event and gets an initial 11am showing on Thursday (28th) at the L’espace LAC cinema, which is the main venue for the whole event. Later, at 7:30pm, it will be at the Cinéma du casino. Friday and Saturday see screenings at the other two screening rooms for the festival La MCL and Le cinéma Paradiso respectively.
