Despite appearances, the two rather awkward looking photos above are not from a couples counselling session for Lilly and Scotty. The scene towards the end of this episode could have been the thing under discussion. Away you go shippers!
The 4th of April 2004 was when ‘Late Returns’ first aired, which is why we are posting some new promo photos today. It’s part of our ‘the same day plus 15 years’ series of Cold Case image updates.
‘Late Returns’, episode 19 of Cold Case season 1, revolved around the murder of a political campaign worker during the 1992 U.S. Presidential election. Politics play a part in the rather unsatisfying conclusion to the story. The powers that be step in protect the chief suspect. The squad are less that happy. Fortunately for us all the days of scandals such as the real one this story is based on are far in the past…
The full-sized version of the two images you see above are now in the KM UK the Gallery. Where else would they be?
To say the least, a recent post here (well, HERE) on KM UK had us a little confused. It involved a video of Kathryn having breakfast with someone at a street-side café in Paris. No context, no date, no name, no pack drill. There was scrambled eggs and coffee though!
Since then we’ve been contacted by a trusted source in France regarding the reason for Kathryn’s unexplained appearance in Paris.
A little background. Two years ago, a Mr (let me check my notes…) Donald J Trump (President of America apparently) got the U.S. to withdraw from the Paris Climate Accord. This was a global agreement to cut CO2 emissions. All the nations of the world had signed up to it, apart from a couple of cheeky hold-outs that wanted it to go further than it did.
However, it looks like some facts have finally manage to penetrate deeply enough to make Mr Trump reconsider his country’s position. That and the personal financial loss of his Florida-based private club Mar-a-Lago being due to disappear underwater in the next 20 years. Try as he might, Mr Trump could not get the local zoning commission to declare the property as a 10,000 sq mile (there’d be no wall to say where it ended!) luxury water park, marina and yacht club.
But how does a man of Mr Trump’s international standing and reputation go about reversing such a major decision whilst saving face? We have been informed that a plan was put in place last year. What he needed was a completely believable and credible envoy to act on his behalf. Someone that could remain detached, whilst dropping a metaphorical pebble of change in the actual warming oceans. Project Aloof Ripl (txtspk for ripple) was initiated and Kathryn agreed to take on the momentous role, travelling to France to make contact with the powers that be in Europe.
Information passed to KM UK suggests that the video posted on YouTube was a coded report back to Mr Trump. The man eating breakfast with Kathryn is her Paris contact known as Little Chef. The fact that it was sunny and Kathryn was wearing a t-shirt, despite being filmed in February in the depths of a French winter, is a message home that the scientific evidence on temperature rises has been proven to be correct. The references to how much more good food you could get for €12 in Paris than for the equivalent amount in Los Angeles, is to indicate that the economic issues for the U.S. are not as bad as were feared and the French suggested solution is workable. The croissant was just a croissant.
As far fetched as this all might sound, let us just hope that there is truth behind it.
Update: Yes, this was my annual attempt at upping the silly on this site for April Fools Day.
The year is marching on at quite a pace. So let’s follow suit and do the March 2019 Cold Case Cast Catch-up. In these regular posts we look at the on-going careers of the other members of the Cold Case cast.
Who should be start with today…? How about John Finn (John Stillman in CC). The picture above rather gave things away, didn’t it? Evidence that despite the breakneck pace of media these days, the gears can grind extremely slowly in Hollywood. Waaaaaaay back in September of 2016 we first reported that the film Finding Steve McQueen had begun filming. It was the culmination of over 5 years of work at that point. Here we are in early 2019 and the film finally had a release a couple of weeks ago in the US of A. The film is based on the true story of a group of thieves that plot to steal $30m of an alleged secret stash of illegal funds owned by the President Richard Nixon. Travis Fimmel (Vikings), William Fichtner (Mom), Forest Whitaker (The Last King Of Scotland) co-star. John plays Mark Felt, an Associate Director of the FBI who gave information anonymously about the Watergate scandal to the reports Woodward and Bernstein under the pseudonym ‘Deep Throat’. That secret wasn’t revealed for 30 years. The iconic actor Steve McQueen mention in the title is a reference to one of the thieves idolising him. The recent season of The Walking Dead, which saw John join the cast, recently came to an end, and it appears that John was only in the pilot of The Enemy Within.
Danny Pino (Scotty Valens in CC) will not be able to reprise his guest starring role in the Netflix sitcom One Day At A Time. It has just been announced that show will not be returning three seasons. Danny has been busy recently promoting the WGN America’s series Gone. It took a long time to get an airing at home but seems to have been well received so the cast have been out there pressing the flesh. We get a two-for-one with Gone as Tracie Thoms (Kat Miller in CC) also features quite prominently across the 12 episode season.
One of the big entertainment news story this past week involves Tracie. Apple has officially announced its subscription streaming service. It struck me as not really news as Apple has had the streaming service for years and back in June last year we first mentioned Tracie signing up for a new drama series for Apple. Many other shows have been know about for a long time too. The show that Tracie is in was, up until recently, known (without a ?) as Are You Sleeping. Now it has been renamed to Truth Be Told and is about Octavia Spencer’s (Hidden Figures) reporter investigating an old case through her podcast. See what Apple have done there? Lizzy Caplan (Cloverfield), Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad), Elizabeth Perkins (Weeds), Mekhi Phifer (ER) co-star.
To round things off, last week Tracie was kind enough to post a couple of photos from a little Cold Case reunion with Kathryn. See HERE. It looks like the two of them were involved in some publicity work for the Start TV network, which is broadcasting Cold Case twice a day at the moment.
From everyone here at KM UK
In recent year’s KM UK has marked Mother’s Day on the 2nd Sunday in May, as that is the date used in many parts of the world. That includes America, and we are very much about an America mother on this site.
This year we’ve gone native and are going with the date used in the UK (and a few other places) which is the 4th Sunday in Lent, also known as Mothering Sunday. Just to be extra confusing, this year there are 5 Sundays in March and the clocks have gone forward today. What day is it?
As we all know being a mother is a difficult job at the best of times, and we’ve had a glimpse at a very different style of parenting recently courtesy of Kathryn’s role in The Dirt. Being constantly drunk and angry at your child for your own problems is definitely not the way to go. Let’s compare and contrast:
I know which I prefer.
Happy Mother’s Day to all mothers around the world.
Is it time to dish the dirt on The Dirt?
Not really. I’ve not exactly watched the film and I’ve definitely not read the book it is based on, and my knowledge of Mötley Crüe is minimal. I’ll leave the reviews to those better qualified than me. Google will provide you with plenty if you want to read some. I will say that the film has got very mixed reviews. Did it go too far? Did it not go far enough? Is it a faithful recreation of the source material? Is that biography actually accurate? Does it matter?
Let us instead focus on the reason we’re here: Kathryn Morris.
As far I can find there was never any news chatter of Kathryn taking a role as the Deana Richards, mother of Mötley Crüe bassist Nikki Sixx (real name Frank Carlton Serafino Feranna, Jr.), in this film. It definitely took us by surprise. The project has been in the planning since shortly after the book was released in 2001, with various directors and actors attached to it over the years.
Kathryn essentially has three distinct scenes in the film. She appears for the first time by the end of minute 3 as Nikki sets up his early days with an abusive father and an uncaring mother (above left). Immediately jumping forward a few years, dad is gone and mother is looking for answers at the bottom of a bottle with which ever man she’s recently picked up (right). Nikki is acting up with loud music, provoking an argument with Deana which results in the police being called. The issue is resolved without an arrest but Nikki makes his attitude towards his mother very clear (below left). That’s all before 7 minutes in.
Our next sighting of Kathryn is just past the hour mark. Nikki and the Crüe are rapidly heading towards (no pun intended) rock bottom. Attempting to calm things down the group’s manager brings Deana to meet Nikki. It doesn’t go well (top). And that’s all she wrote.
So, we get Deana in three time periods, meaning we get Kathryn with three different looks and many different emotions.
There are now over 140 Full HD (1080p) screencaps from Kathryn’s scene are now in the KM UK Gallery.
