Next Tuesday (10th Jan 2012) sees the release of Moneyball on DVD/Blu-ray in its North American homeland. As with the movie’s cinematic release, here in the United Kingdom there will be a couple of months delay before we get the home entertainment version.
The DVD and Blu-ray versions are now up for pre-order on the Amazon UK website (other online movie retailers exist) ahead of the March 19th release. There are even “special edition” versions listed that include a copy of the original book by Michael Lewis. At time of writing the prices for the ones with the book are the same as those without. Go figure.
No word yet on the DVD extras and whether they will include the restaurant scene starring Kathryn that we previewed here on KM UK just before Xmas. Often European versions suffer compared to their American cousins because they have more language tracks to fit in. Some extras get dropped to make space. The Blu-ray is more likely to be the same due to the higher capacity and the fact that it is region free.
Moneyball will be making headlines, not necessarily on KM UK though, in the coming months as we get into awards season. It has already received a nomination in the Producers Guild Awards, due to be announced on January 21st, and is likely to be up for Oscars.
The usual blurb: Oakland A’s general manager Billy Beane (Brad Pitt) challenges the system and defies conventional wisdom when he is forced to rebuild his small-market team, on a limited budget.
Update: DVDizzy has a review of the US DVD/Blu-ray release. It mentions three deleted scenes on the DVD. The first involves Philip Seymour Hoffman. The third is a sort of different ending. Their description of the second reduces it to “Billy on a date”. That’d be the scene exclusively previewed here on KM UK before Xmas with Brad and Kathryn in a restaurant. Way to reduce her role even further, from wife to “date”! The Blu-ray extras don’t sound like they include any more scenes involving Kathryn. Other reviews I’ve found echo all that.
