Back at the beginning of January we reported that the French TV station RTL and the weekly Télé 2 semaines magazine were running various polls to determine the fans’ favourite actors, actresses and TV shows.
On Monday the results were posted and it was, sadly, not good news for Kathryn.
The foreign actress category that Kathryn featured in was won by Stana Katic from Castle. She took the prize by 4.5% from Jennifer Morrison of Once Upon A Time. Kathryn didn’t make the top 3. And we thought the French people really liked her.
Nathon Fillon, also of Castle, took first place in the equivalent male category, beating out competition from Hugh Laurie (House) and Simon Baker (The Mentalist). Clearly the French people do like Castle, and why not, it is a very good show.
However, Esprits Criminels, which we believe is Criminal Minds, just pipped Castle to the foreign TV show award by 0.5%. So close! As Richard Castle would probably say.
The Futon Critic website has published Nielsen audience figures covering the 19th of January 2013 on cable TV in the US. The night that included première broadcast of Kathryn’s TV movie The Sweeter Side Of Life.
We can’t claim to fully understand the Nielsen numbers and methods but here they are as reported for TSSOL:
1.975 million viewers, #5; 0.366 million adults 18-49 (0.3 rating), #9
In fact the numbers are fairly meaningless without some context. The previous weekend’s Hallmark Channel movie premiere (12 January 2013) was a film called Nearlyweds, starring Danielle Panabaker and Naomi Judd. That film’s figures were:
1.323 million viewers, #3; 0.297 million adults 18-49 (0.2 rating), #6
As you can see TSSOL got over 650,000 more viewers and a 23% higher rating in the, what for some reason is seen as the most important, “key demographic” 18-49 year old age group. We don’t believe that the repeat showings, straight afterwards and since, are included.
The relative positions in the rankings (TSSOL: #5 and #9, Nearlyweds: #3 and #6) don’t paint such a rosy picture though. However, the Lifetime channel’s screening of a drama and documentary about the Casey Anthony trial (a mother charged with the murder of her 2 year old daughter in 2008 which became a huge news story in 2011) took the first and third slots, pushing TSSOL down two from where it would otherwise have been. A few other shows up against TSSOL got large numbers in the “key demo” but were lower overall adding to that #9.
Congratulations to all involved in The Sweeter Side Of Life on its success.

It has been a while, too long in fact, since we saw Kathryn in a significant new project. Since the Cougars, Inc. VOD release on the 1st of April 2011 (May for the DVD) there has been… well, nothing really. Of several scenes filmed for Moneyball, one of the biggest movies of 2011, only a singleton made it to the public and that was just as a deleted scene on the DVD. One short film (Sunday’s Mother) that has only been shown at a few festivals. That’s it. As regulars know there are a couple of other projects in the offing: another short (The Coin) and a small role in a feature film (2 Br/1 Ba). That makes this, the lead role in a TV movie, a big deal for us fans of Kathryn. Can it possibly live up to the weight of expectation?
It was so good to have Kathryn back on our screens. We’ve missed her very much. A comedy role like this is new for her too. I have wanted to see her do comedy for a long time and have no doubt she can do it with aplomb. Continue reading »
Normally in this space we’d have some text describing the film or episode of Cold Case the screencaps have come from, but frankly you probably haven’t even read this far through this sentence.
It’s pretty certain that you won’t get to this second paragraph so I’ll just write “blah” a couple of times and move on. Blah, blah.
Assuming you are still reading, a comprehensive set of screencaps covering The Sweeter Side Of Life are now in the Gallery.
For those on the East coast and Central regions The Sweeter Side Of Life will have just about finished. The West coasters will have to wait just a little longer. Once you’ve seen it please let us know what you thought with a comment below.
Below is a poll for you to give us a quick reaction to the movie. Was the movie the sweetest thing you ever did see, or had it gone stale before its time?
If you come over all creative and wish to write a more comprehensive critique of the film then please contact us and we’ll put together a special review page for any submissions.
There will be a full KM UK review in a few days.
Also, since the last post we’ve added a few more on set photos to the Gallery, courtesy of Michael Damian and his Twitter feed. Thanks to him for them.
Update (3 February 2013): After two weeks we’ve closed the poll. It was the biggest poll we’ve done with more voters than ever before. As you can see below it was a landslide for the likes with only a few remaining to be convinced. No one went for the hate it option. Thank you to everyone that took part.
