The Coin Is Underexposed?

I thought our short film director (as in he directs short films, not the other thing) du jour had jumped the official gun again in announcing this today (or yesterday due to the time difference to LA). Turns out he didn’t, I just expected this to be officially announced in a few days.

The powerful and award winning short film The Coin will be getting another outing. This time it is at the Underexposed Film Festival in York County. A quick check on Wikipedia reveals nine York Counties, six of them in the USA, so we’ll need to narrow it down further. This is YC in SC, or the eastern state of South Carolina.

This is the second year of the film festival, organised by the Arts Council of York County, and runs from the 14-16th of November (Thursday-Saturday). The venue is the Community Performance Center on East Main St. in the county’s captial of Rock Hill.

The Coin is part of the festival’s “Directors Choice” section. The 8 minute long short being specifically one of 13 films in the set labelled “Narrative”. No word yet on the exact screening schedule. We’ll update you when we can.

Kathryn @ Rape Treatment Center Benefit 2005

I did consider coming up with an alternative title for this post to avoid the use of a potentially awkward word, but that would not be the right thing to do. Such important issues should not be swept under the carpet to spare a few blushes. Over the past year the issues around rape seems to have hit the headlines a lot because of certain strongly held views on women and women’s health issues. Wrong views we should stress.

The latest edition of this event, an annual benefit and brunch for the Rape Treatment Center, Santa Monica, California, happened just last weekend (Sunday, 29 September) but we are heading back to 2005 when Kathryn attended. As you can see above fellow CBS crime drama star Marg Helgenberger (Catherine Willows in CSI: Las Vegas) and were Kathryn’s two Cold Case co-stars Thom Barry and John Finn (see below right).

Unlike Kathryn, Marg will be back on CBS this season with a new action drama called Intelligence, co-starring Josh Holloway (Sawyer in Lost). It is slated to start in February, once another new show Hostages completes it first season run. Both shows have fewer episodes than many of the big networks high profile shows.

Cold Case S02E22 – Best Friends HD Screencaps

The case in Best Friends was one of the oldest that Cold Case covered in its 156 episodes. It is also one of the fans favourites and is often cited for the emotional effect on the viewers.

10 Years Ago Today

CC_Titles_16 It might be difficult to believe but a whole decade has passed since Cold Case first hit the television screens of the United States Of America.

Sunday the 28th, September 2003 was the day when the world got to Look Again for the first time Did you watch Cold Case on that première day? Did the format hook you straight away or were you just mesmerised by the leading lady?

According to the lists of traditional gifts of wedding anniversaries the 10th year is Tin (or Aluminium/Aluminum). The modern US list is a little more materialistic with it hitting the valuable items much, much sooner!

Looking back through old TV news from early in 2003 it is interesting to see in a brief way the journey the show went on before going to air in the autumn of that year.

Initially the show was called Cold Cases (plural) and Justin Chambers was leading the way. Shortly afterwards news of his female co-star broke. You may have heard of her Next we get a possible name change to The Unsolved. Perhaps the issue with the other show with Cold Case in the title was being dealt with at that time. The Unsolved was thought to be up for a Friday night broadcast slot, Mel Winkler was the actor in the role of Will Jeffries, and Jeremy Ratchford’s character was called Ronnie Vera. By the 2003 Upfronts (the big press events in May) the name was back to the singular Cold Case and the time slot had shifted to Sunday nights at 8pm, both of which we became so familiar with. The pilot must have been re-shot as the first episode with Thom Barry as Jeffries. A month before the opening night Danny Pino was added to the cast for a later episode replacing Justin.

In the first week Cold Case had the largest audience for a CBS drama première in years. It beat the new N.C.I.S. show by over 2.5 million viewers. Where is that show now? Within a couple of weeks Cold Case had an order for additional episodes and within a month had a full season order.

The 2003/2004 season saw a lot of big new shows it the air. In addition to those already mentioned, in no particular order, there were shows like Karen Cisco (starring Carla Gugino, a short lived cop show based on the character played by Jennifer Lopez in Out Of Sight), Arrested Development (still going after a few bumps in the road), Nip/Tuck (long running drama about plastic surgeons in Miami), Tru Calling (post-Buffy Eliza Dushku drama), and teen soap opera One Tree Hill.

Cold Case Cast Catch-up – September 2013

jeremy_ratchford_death_valley_001_430x180 We’ll start a little further afield than normal for this, the September 2013 edition of KM UK’s Cold Case Cast Catch-up. In each CCCC-up we take look at the on-going careers of the other key players from the long running show.

I’ve got good news and bad news (you probably know both already though). Which do you want to hear first? “Bad” you say? OK.

The AMC television network in the USA has cancelled The Killing. Based on a Danish drama series of the same name (but in Danish as Forbrydelsen) the show was Veena Sud’s project after Cold Case. Veena was a writer, producer and executive producer on CC and continued in those roles on The Killing. I know you will correct me if I’m wrong but I don’t believe that the US version was a direct remake in the way that some are. The American audience figures for the localised season one started strongly but viewers reacted badly to the way it ended. The second season largely redeemed itself but the show only just escaped cancellation. It sounds like season 3 was something of a disappointment. Lead actress Mireille Enos had small roles in many TV shows, Cold Case being one of the few she missed out, but The Killing really brought her to the fore. Enos went on to star in the Brad Pitt movie World War Z (she played his wife and only a select few have had that honour) and has several other film projects in the pipeline. Unless another US network or online streaming service like NetFlix steps up and saves The Killing it will be one of the more easily solvable cases.

Now on to the good news. Cold Case creator Meredith Stiehm’s next project was Homeland which she co-produced at various levels and also wrote several episodes. Homeland is about to start its 3rd season in the US of A this coming Sunday (29th September) with the UK debut the following week (6th October). But that is not the good news we’re reporting today. Meredith’s more recent show is The Bridge. This is another of the wave of Scandanavian dramas being shown and/or remade around the world. The Bridge is actually a literal cross-border project in its original form as it is a Swedish and Danish co-production set around a crime in both countries. A body is found lying on the boundary between the two countries, with the added twist the name suggests that that line is in the middle of a bridge joining the two nations. Cops from both sides have to co-operate to solve the case. The US remake takes the same idea but transposes it to the US-Mexico border. German actress Diane Kruger (National Treasure) takes a lead role. None of which is good news either. In the last couple of days, just before the penultimate episode of season one was due to air, the FX channel that carries The Bridge announced it had been renewed for a second run.
