Sometime For The Centime, Franc-ly

poster_001Back in the latter part of January we brought you news of the short film The Coin‘s first foray abroad.

The petit movie had been chosen as an official selection at the “Fenêtre Sur Courts” Festival International du Film de Court Métrage d’Avignon.  That’s the Avignon International Short Film Festival.  Avignon in France.

fenetre_sur_courts_poster_001The festival organisers have recently released an initial (subject to change) schedule of proceedings so we can make an early attempt to narrow down which of the three days The Coin will be screened on.

The festival runs from April 4th to the 6th, with events running from 9am on the Friday to 7:30pm on the Sunday.  Our little-movie-that-could starring Christopher Lloyd (Piranha 3DD), Kathryn and young Jack Ryan Shepherd, gets it airing in the prime-time slot on the Saturday afternoon.

As part of ‘Competition 4’ starting at 2pm The Coin will be screened with six other short films.  They are mostly French films, with one Spanish entry.  Because our friend the writer/director/producer Fabien Martorell is French his film is listed as being ‘French/USA’  :-)

Fingers crossed for another award.

You can read more details on the festival at the Fenêtre Sur Courts website (it’s in French of course).

Apologies to all (especially the French amongst you) for any attempted puns  :-)

Kathryn @ Minority Report DVD Launch – Feb 2003

minority_report_dvd_012Oh, oh!  I think the KM UK time machine (the KARDIS? not be konfused with a kardashian!) must be broken. It’s started moved in space as well as time, and seems to have turned into a teleport device like The Fly!  Something has gone horribly, albeit beautifully, wrong! Abort! Abort!

We entered 27 Feb 2003 - Minority Report DVD Launch into the control panel and we’ve ended up in… Spain of all places.  And we don’t have a ‘Cruise’ in front of us.  We’ve got a ‘Cruz’.  That’s an even shorter ‘Cruise’ (there was no way we were getting through this without a height joke).  Joking aside, it’s Mónica Cruz, younger sister of Penélope who, I understand, was in a relationship with Tom at this time.  In keeping with the plot of Minority Report seeing the two ladies together like that I have a vision of a future crime or two being committed.  I can’t be in the minority with that (see what I did there?) 😮

Kathryn starred in Minority Report as Lara Clarke, the estranged wife of Tom’s John Anderton character.  The loss of their son is a key element of the story and Kathryn plays an important role in the later stages.  The very successful Steven Spielberg-directed sci-fi movie, based on a short story by Philip K Dick, also stars Max von Sydow, Samantha Morton and Colin Farrell.

One last thing: who is that dummy on the right? :-)

13 photos of Kathryn and Mónica in Madrid to promote the VHS and DVD launch of Minority Report in Spain are now the KM UK Gallery.

We will no doubt be returning to both 2003 and Minority Report in the future.

Cold Case Cast Catch-up – February 2014

jeremy_ratchford_001_430x180Phew, February’s short! It only feels like last month that we posted the January edition of the KM UK ‘CCCC-up’, where we bring you up to date with what’s going on in the careers of the Cold Case cast members that aren’t Kathryn.  We’ll start with award winners and end on a mystery…

Jeremy Ratchford (Nick Vera on CC).  Jeremy.  Jezza.  The J-Man.  JR.  J.  OK, I’ll stop.  I’ve been mentioning the film Lost On Purpose; which stars Jeremy, Jane Kaczmarek (Malcolm In The Middle)  C Thomas Howell (The Outsiders) and 2012 Oscar winner Octavia Spencer (The Help); for what feels like forever.  It has been available to watch via the Vimeo website for a few months now but continues to be screened as festivals.  In just the last couple of days the movie won a directors award for the writer/directors Eshom & Ian Nelms at the New Hollywood Online Film Festival NUHO Awards.  Well done to them.  Lost On Purpose is about a woman (Kaczmarek) struggling to run a family owned dairy farm, the farm hands she employs, and facing increased competition from larger co-ops.  Jeremy appears to have worked on a short film recently.  A listing for a project called A Slow Coming Dark is now on IMDb and is described thus: “Three ex-cons join forces to kidnap the son of a very wealthy man for a healthy ransom, but there is one major problem in the equation.”  The release date is down as “Los Angeles, 20th March 2014”, which could equate to a film festival but I’ve yet to narrow it down any further.  Jeremy’s role is just named “T.J.”

There is still no word on the Irish TV show An Bronntanas which stars John Finn (John Stillman on CC).  The five part drama, centred on the crew of a lifeboat and what they discover on a boat they go to rescue, was due to start being broadcast on the Irish TG4 station back in January.  So far I’ve no evidence of it happening.  It’s like it got lost out at sea.  If you know different please let me know.

We can’t complete a CCCC-up without including Tracie Thoms (Kat Miller on CC).  If it wasn’t for Tracie these posts would be quarterly :-)  The short film A Different Tree, which stars Tracie, was broadcast on the HBO channel in the US from earlier this month.  I believe that it has been shown several times already, with more screenings to come in March.  The 15 minute long feature about an 8 year old girl (Morgan Ashley) and her absent father (Jason E Kelly) is also available on the HBO Go streaming service until the end of March.  Tracie plays Pearl’s (Morgan) mother Jada.  You might recognise Jason E Kelly from a small role in the Cold Case episode Mind Games (S06E18).  He also worked alongside Jeremy Ratchford in the film The New Republic, which came out in late 2012.  In fact you can see them both together in the trailer on YouTube here.  For a change a couple of weeks ago Tracie wasn’t starring in a film, she was hosting one!  Her own house had been taken over for some filming on a project called 2 Black Dudes.  But Tracie being Tracie meant that the helping out on set didn’t last and she was off to do some work on a film called The Concessionaires Must Die.  Details can be found on the official website.  And what of the mysterious ending?  A couple of days ago Tracie Tweeted that she was back in Philadelphia, the setting of and scene of some exterior filming on Cold Case.  She wouldn’t say what she was doing in Philly but she described it as a “eye-opening experience!”  Curiouser and curiouser.

Kathryn @ ACE Eddie Awards – Feb 2001

ace_eddie_awards_003The things some people come up with.

I have no idea how many of these groups, organisations and trade bodies exist but so many of them seem to have their own awards and accompanying ceremonies.

Of course, only the very best create cleverly named statues that appear at first to bear no relation to the subject at hand but then when you think about harder it is very, very clever.  Who, me?  I don’t know what you mean :-)

The American Cinema Editors (you can’t tell me they didn’t strive to reverse engineer that acronym) want to make sure the people working in their field get some recognition beyond the Oscars etc. and you can’t argue with that.  The Eddie (see what they did there?) has been given since 1962 after previously just holding a dinner to honour the Oscar nominees in the editing categories.  Since then it has branched out to include awards for dramas, comedies, animations and TV.  Oh yes, I can read Wikipedia with the best of them :-0  Whoever short-listed the TV series for the 2014 event must have got a Breaking Bad DVD boxset for Xmas as it had 4 of the 5 nominations.

The 2014 ACE Eddie Awards have happened already (7th Feb).  You can bet it is the slickest of shows, with no long-winded speeches, that always finishes on time.  No cutting off a winner mid-way through their acceptance speeches at the Eddies, oh no.  Switch flashback, we find ourselves in a time when Kathryn attended the ACE Eddie Awards.  Picture the scene: it’s February, the 25th, the year is 2001.  Gladiator and Almost Famous are winning Eddies.  A beautiful young actress walks the red carpet.  It was a different time.  Kathryn attended award ceremonies for a start :-)

Three large and two small photos of Kathryn at the ACE Eddie Awards 2001 are now in KM UK the Gallery.  As you can see she had short hair and was wearing a simple black outfit.  Many thanks to Alexia at Marvellous Maxine Peake, a website about the actress Maxine Peake who is marvellous, for the big photos.

PS.  Before you say it, the irony of this piece being so long for the sake of 5 photos is not lost on me :-)

The C.O.I.N. At The C.I.F.F. – Update

poster_001This one won’t shouldn’t show up my limited foreign language skills, unlike the last one :-)

In a late night (for those of us this side of ‘the pond’) Tweet the writer/director/producer of the intriguing short film The Coin let it be known that his film will be screened at the Cleveland International Film Festival (CIFF) in March.  That’s Cleveland, Ohio in the USA.

cleveland_international_film_festival_logo_260x93Speaking of ‘ponds’ (it will become painfully clear in a moment) this, the 38th running of the CIFF, will open with a gala screening (i.e. expensive cinema ticket + after party) of British film Not Another Happy Ending.  The romcom stars leggy, red-headed ex-Doctor Who assistant Karen Gillan.  Still not with me on the ‘pond’ thing?  Karen played Amy Pond in Doctor Who.

The Coin, which stars Christopher Lloyd (Back To The Future) and Kathryn, is scheduled to be shown three times over the course of the 12-day long festival, all in the early days.  Starting on the second day (2:15pm, Thursday, 20th March) as part of the ‘Shorts Program 4’, a 90 minute screening with 5 other films.  That is then repeated on the Friday a little later in the day (5:10pm).

On the Saturday (22nd March) The Coin is shown again, this time alongside 6 other films as part of the ‘Hollywood Shorts Program’ at the Hanna Theatre at 2:30pm.

Check the CIFF website for all the ‘when, where, why and how?’ details.  If you are able to attend the event let us know how it goes.

Congrats to all involved in The Coin on being selected again and thanks to Fabien for letting us know.

Update:  A second showing of the ‘Hollywood Shorts Program’ has been added on the Sunday (23rd) morning at 9:20am.
