A short while ago this evening director/writer/producer Fabien Martorell told us that his short film The Coin has been selected for inclusion in the San Pedro International Film Festival (SPIFF). That’s it’s logo (or one it has used) on the right.
Before half the world gets excited I should clarify which San Pedro we are talking about. A five second check on Wikipedia suggests there are dozens of places across the world called San Pedro, not surprisingly most of them are South America. The San Pedro in question here is the one in the south of Los Angeles and incorporates the massive Port Of Los Angeles.
The third running of the SPIFF (which sounds spiffing when written like that!) is due to take place over three days in mid-October this year. No more details on the screening(s) are available at the moment. I will, of course, update you all when such information becomes available.

It has only been a week since I first posted about this event but it is worth a classic KM UK ‘quick reminder’, where ‘quick’ means the usual long ramble.
The short film The Coin starring Kathryn and Christopher Lloyd (Back To The Future) will be making a screening appearance at the Portobello Film Festival in London on Saturday (6th Sept). It will be one of nearly 30 films shown under the banner ‘French Films’. The collection is an eclectic mix ranging from 5 minutes to nearly 1.5 hours, and from the U (universal, i.e. suitable for all ages) to 18 certificates.
Based on my own guestimate and a Tweet by director/writer/producer Fabien Martorell’s the other day, The Coin could be shown at around 3pm. I’m not sure if Fabien is basing his figure on something he’s been told, worked it out like me, or read it here.
A key element of the Portobello Film Festival that I managed to not really mention previously was the fact that it is free. Free as in no charge, no tickets. Age restrictions do apply of course, and no doubt all venues have capacity limits as well.
The 2014 Portobello Film Festival started last week and continues on until Sunday the 14th of September. Events are held in venues around Portobello Road in the W11 area of west London. Check the official website for more details.

Start Up, episode 7 of Cold Case‘s 3rd season, won at a canter in last week’s poll so that gets the honour of being next week’s featured posted. Lucky you.

A body turns up in the exam room of Frannie (Philly PD’s answer to Dr Maura Isles, played by Susan Chuang). When the dead woman’s son comes to claim the body he denies it is his mother. Now we have case of identity theft, a mystery dead body, and a cold case from 1954.
Back then the woman, Bettie Petrowski, was suffering from bipolar disorder and was committed (see what they did there?) to a mental institution as she was considered a danger to herself and others, including her young son.
In the end we get a tragic tale and a damning indictment of the way mental health problems were treated not that long ago. It would be nice to say we’ve moved on since then…
This episode of Cold Case had quite a guest cast list with Natasha Gregson Wagner (Two Girls and a Guy) and Diane Ladd (Chinatown) both starring. Also, not only did Susan Chuang make one of her occasional appearances but so did Kevin McCorkle as Det Gil Sherman. In fact we saw both Gil and Josie Sutton (Sarah Brown) for the final time in this one.

It being mid-summer this will be a relatively quiet one but we’ll see what we can do for our latest Cold Case Cast Catch-up (aka CCCC-up) for August 2014. Each month I try to give brief updates on the careers of the members of the Cold Case cast that aren’t Kathryn.
After twicepreviously mentioning that Mr Thom Barry (see above, Will Jeffries on CC) had taken on a recurring role on the TNT drama series Perception I was assuming that this post would be the one to confirm it. However, the show finished its summer run last week, and is now on hiatus, with no sign of the a new FBI field office boss played by Thom. Presumably he will be appearing in the set of five episodes that close out the show’s third season due for broadcast from February 2015. Speaking of Thom, it looks like he has been signed to play the father of R&B star Aaliyah in a Lifetime network TV movie about her life. I gather that the project has been in the works for sometime and has had a few issues with casting and the family of the singer. With Alexandra Shipp (House of Anubis) taking the over lead role and talkshow host Wendy Williams exec producing, Aaliyah: Princess of R&B is due to première in the autumn. That is assuming it does not hit further problems.
It wouldn’t be a CCCC-up without mentioning Tracie Thoms (Kat Miller on CC). She’s is a one entertainment industry. The couple of weeks Tracie has been Tweeting extensively about the shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri. In amongst those messages she mentioned being on set, though didn’t reveal any more than that. For those in the US and with access to the Showtime network you can, apparently, see the woman-on-woman fight to the death movie Raze on there until mid-September. Check EPG for details. This weekend Tracie is due to have her final outing in the For The Record: Tarantino show, which features dramatised performances of songs used in films by writer/director Quentin Tarantino.
