The Coin Goes Off Piste

That’s not what I said! Read it again

Bit out of nowhere this one.

Fabien Martorell’s short film The Coin yesterday started a series of nightly screenings at an event running alongside the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships 2015, currently being held in the Swedish city of Falun.

Falun is about 115 miles (180km) north west of Sweden’s capital Stockholm.

When you have a big thing like a world championship taking part in a region you need to entertain the many visitors during the time they are not watching the sport. Cultural festivals, concerts etc. are often put on do just that.

The Bryggcaféet café in Falun has teamed up with the Peace & Love Film Festival to host the screening of a short film festival each evening from 6pm. With The Coin there are six other films from around the world, including Smog Journeys from China and Matthew Modine’s Jesus Was Commie. The screenings continue until the end of the championships on the 1st of March.

A.I. Artificial Intelligence – Tonight BBC1

And when I say tonight I mean the night of Thursday, the 19th of February 2015.

It’s nearly 14 years since A.I. Artificial Intelligence was released. Difficult to believe it has been that long but we still don’t have intelligent, talking teddy bears or life-like robots. Hoverboards haven’t quite made it either, despite Back To The Future II predicting that we would all be riding them by 2015. Come on geeks! Where’s our hoverboards?!?!

Speaking of intelligent ideas and things coming back from the past… Neat segue hey?

The British Broadcasting Corporation is honouring its audience with a viewing of A.I. Artificial Intelligence tonight at 11:45pm. It’s been granted an upgrade to BBC1 too, having been shown on BBCs 2 and 3 the last few times.

The recent release, in parts of Europe at least, of the Alex Garland (28 Days Later…) movie Ex Machina has seen A.I. mentioned quite a lot. Like Ex Machina, it too asks questions about our possible relationship with artificial intelligence technology in the future. For those not familiar with Ex Machina I was surprised to just find out that it will not be out in the USA for several more months.

For those not aware Kathryn makes an all too brief appearance as a performer at a sort of circus in the middle of the film.

Kathryn @ Art Directors Guild Awards 2005

Awards seasons, like the one we are in the middle of, could easily give you the impression it is all about actors, actresses and directors.

The big ceremonies like the Oscars and the BAFTAs are largely made up of presentations in those categories. They’re the ones that get all the publicity. It is understandable that the people you see on the screen, and the person considered responsible for where they are placed within its borders, get all the attention.

However, film-making involves a lot of different disciplines, and I’m not talking Fifty Shades Of Grey-style discipline.

Amongst the many awards events at this time of year is the Art Directors Guild Excellence In Production Design Awards. The 19th running occurred a couple of weeks ago, at the end of January. Production designers for, amongst others, The Grand Budapest Hotel, Guardians Of The Galaxy, Birdman, Game Of Thrones, and The Big Bang Theory won in various categories. Even the Oscars won an award. Have we reached the (no pun intended) stage where award shows are winning awards?

Back in 2005 Walk The Line was the big hit movie talking all the plaudits, and an ADG award. TV series Rome and TV movie Empire Falls were also recipients.

Actually, everyone was a winner in 2005 because Kathryn attended that year. So far, this event has evaded this site like some evade taxes. We’re closing that loophole right now!

The Coin Is Speechless

No, The Coin, the short film by Fabien Martorell, has not been turned into a silent movie. Though, having said that, it could work as one.

I was aware this news was coming but Fabien let the cat out of the bag a little earlier than expected. It’s festival week on KM UK!

In this case ‘speechless’ refers to the Speechless Film Festival, which is held in the city of Mankato, Minnesota. Mankato is around 70 miles (115km) south of Minneapolis. One of its claims-to-fame is featuring in the TV series Little House On The Prairie as a nearby trading town.

The remark above about The Coin possibly working as a silent film is not a throw-away one. The focus of the Speechless Film Festival is communication via the visual medium of film, regardless of the language used in any dialogue. Fabien’s strong imagery should serve his short film well.

This, the 3rd annual SFF, is scheduled to take place over two days in the latter half of March. More details as we get them.
