HollyShorts Batman!

hollyshorts_film_fest_poster_1582x2048Kapow!

Just when you thought… (this is sounding familiar)… it was safe… (oh no, it’s totally different)… to assume that The Coin has got no more film festivals to visit, up pops another one.

With a poster reminiscent of the one for a certain drama film that aired in the UK recently… hint, hint… the HollyShorts Film Festival is having it’s 11th running, across 10 days, in 9 (+13) days time.  Don’t you just ‘ate it when that happens? :-)

Given its name it will come as no surprise that the event takes place in Hollywood, the ‘TCL Chinese Theatres 6’ to be precise.

As seems to be the norm when we first report these things, no schedule has been released as of yet so we’ll return to this event when we can bring you more detail.  Tickets are becoming available on the official HollyShorts Film Festival website covering individual days and all-access passes.

Also as per usual we have to thank The Coin‘s writer/director/producer Fabien Martorell for letting us know about another screening of his film.  Fingers crossed for a prize or two.

The Alright* Chap Gets UK Rating

poster_005We do things a little differently in Britain.  We drive on the correct side of the road (as do a few select countries), we use a sensible date format (to be honest most countries do that except for one notable exception) and we use our own age rating system for films.

The age rating actually means the minimum age that a person has to be to be allowed into a cinema to watch it… a part from the 12A, which is more of a recommendation and requires an accompanying adult (hence the ‘A’).

A couple of weeks ago the thriller The Perfect Guy got its rating from the US board responsible for such things.  Yesterday the Brits stepped up and gave their verdict on the film.

The BBFC (the British Board Of Film Classification) passed The Perfect Guy with no cuts required and it received the (sort of) predicted 15 rating.  No specifics for the decision have been released yet.  The more general description is:

  • strong violence, sex, threat

Just prior to the November launch date the BBFC will likely give a detailed description of areas of the film worthy of note.  They are very proactive at giving film going parents all the information they need to decide for themselves what their child can watch.  Of course, with the UK getting quite a late release date compared to other parts of the world we’ll likely know a lot about the film by then.

* Steady on old bean, we don’t want to give the gentleman ideas above his station  😉

Horror Hits Hotspot Tuesday

poster_001As Britain suffers through another heatwave (not really, it is warm but this is Britain so we’re just grateful it’s not snowing!) the Horror Channel is going to raise more than temperatures this coming week.

The 1998 TV movie Inferno (not to be confused with lots of other films with similar titles) gets an airing on British TV on Tuesday afternoon (21st July) starting at 3:50pm on the Horror Channel.

I’m guessing the channel has shown the film before, but as I only focus on widely available stations for these Media Alerts I’ve not had reason to mention it before.  The Horror Channel has been broadcasting for over 10 years but until earlier this year it has only been on the satellite and cable systems.  Now it is on  over-the-air Freeview, the minimum that anyone in the UK needs to watch TV.

Inferno is a drama about a variety of people dealing with the possible end of days scenario caused by a massive fireball ejected from the Sun.  As it approaches Earth the temperature rises to dangerous levels.

James Remar (Dexter) and Stephanie Niznik (Everwood) are the main leads but I think there is more like a collection of story lines involving different characters.

Kathryn plays the role of Ryan Tibbet who appears to be a mechanic (all short hair and smudges of oil) and she is involved with Jonathan LaPaglia’s Eddie.  Jonathan went on to guest star in the last couple of seasons of Cold Case as an Assistant District Attorney so they worked together again.  From clips I’ve seen Kathryn tries to take advantage of the heat to err… take advantage of Eddie.  It should be worth watching the film just for that scene 😉  I’ve never actually been able to watch the film in full so I’m not sure of the plot details.  I guess many of us will know more soon  :-)

As well as the airing on Tuesday there is a repeat on Wednesday morning (11:10am) and Saturday (25th) at 4:50pm.  On some systems you may also have access to a +1 channel.  No excuses then :-)

The always helpful KM UK Gallery already contains a small number of poor screencaps from Inferno.  They are some of only a handful on the whole site that aren’t my own work.  I’ve now added a couple of promo photos and some artwork.

I’ll no doubt be returning to Inferno in the future.

CBS Press Tour Stars Party 2008

cbs_press_tour_stars_party_2008_20It’s SHOWTIME!

Well, actually it’s CBS but it says Showtime on the backdrop too!

To help us get over what I gather the yoof of today are calling ‘hump day’.  Apparently it is to do with it being the middle, or hump, of the week and not a crude reference to an act surely more suited to a carefree the weekend.

The memories of last weekend are fading and the next still seems so far away.  What could be better to help with those mid-week blues than some new and improved photos of our favourite lady.

Back in 2008 the TV networks CBS, CW and Showtime threw a little soirée for the press to help promote their upcoming autumn season of shows with the aid of the stars of said shows.  But what to call such a magic night of mingling of Hollywood’s best and assorted members of the journalistic fraternity?  So many possibilities but can any of them capture the true spirit of the event?  Maybe.  However they went with ‘CBS, CW and Showtime Press Tour Party’.  Truly awe inspiring  😉

What is awe-plenty (‘some’ just doesn’t cover it) is that Kathryn attended this 18th of July 2008 happening.  She looked gorgeous, and bestowed upon us some amazing, hi-res photos.

Now we’ve added to the collection and super-sized a existing one.  Find them all in the Gallery.  Enjoy.

The Coin Looks On The Brightside

brightside_tavern_film_fest_logo_310x260To paraphrase: Just when you thought you’d got out, they pull you back in!

Short film The Coin continues in it slow march to world domination of film festivals.  The next target is a Jersey City at The Brightside Tavern Film Festival.

For those of a geographical bent: if the Statue Of Liberty was to look back over her left shoulder she’d be glancing in the general direction of The Brightside Tavern.

The event takes place over the weekend of the 15th and 16th of August so just five weeks to go from today (11th July).

The organisers have plenty of awards to be given for the many films to be screened so fingers crossed for Fabien Martorell’s 9 minute piece.  Thanks to him for letting us know, as usual.

If you can attend the BTFF the please let us know about your experience.

The BTFF website has/will have more details.
