Surgeon General Information

cbs_logo_178x52.png

It’s been nearly two days since the news of Kathryn’s new project broke so let’s collate all the info we have on it and run through some talking points:

  • Show name:  Surgeon General / The Surgeon General
  • Kathryn’s role:  Lydia Ferrari (aka LaFerrari to us at KM UK :-) )
  • Lydia’s job title:  Chief Of Staff to the Surgeon General
  • Co-stars:  Jason Isaacs (Awake), Beth Riesgraf (Leverage) and Katherine McNamara.
  • TV network:  CBS
  • Filming location:  Atlanta, Georgia
  • Writer/Creator:  Samuel Baum (Lie To Me)
  • Pilot director:  Rod Lurie (Resurrecting The Champ)
  • Premise:  Dr John Sherman (Jason Isaacs) is the Surgeon General of the United States, the nation’s doctor.  He has to deal with the political side of the medical profession, taking on government for the sake of the people.

Kathryn is not the lead actor in the show, that’s Jason Issacs as the Surgeon General Dr John Sherman.  The Chief Of Staff to the Surgeon General is a management role, second in command to the General.  Incumbents in both roles hold military senior military ranks.  The Surgeon General works in the United States Public Health Service Commissioned Corps (PHSCC), based in Washington.

Lydia Ferrari is described as “fiercely loyal chief of staff and long-time friend, who was close to Sherman’s late wife. The consummate political operative, Ferrari admires Sherman and runs interference when he won’t play ball with their White House superiors” (THR).

Although talked about as a medical show because of the obvious doctor element, Surgeon General is more likely to be more of a political drama.  No doubt there’ll be some investigative work as Beth Riesgraf plays Dr. Page Wyatt, a micro-organisms expert.   TV have a habit of expanding characters roles in to investigators beyond the scope of the real job, see the CSI franchise for prime examples of that.  It is not going to be an E.R., House or Bones.

Kathryn Joins Surgeon General Pilot

cbs_logo_178x52.png

Looks like the sort of Kathryn-related news we’ve all been waiting for has finally broken.

Kathryn has, apparently, signed on for a new CBS pilot called Surgeon General.  The Surgeon General is appointed by the US Government to over see matters of public health.

British actor Jason Isaacs (Awake and Harry Potter) has the lead role of Dr John Sherman.  Kathryn is earmarked to play his Chief Of Staff, Lydia Ferrari.  After the recent launch of the new Ferrari hybrid supercar, here on KM UK we will call Kathryn’s character in Surgeon General ‘LaFerrari’ 😉  At this stage it is just a pilot, but it does mean it has passed earlier stages of acceptance regarding the script etc.  Depending on how well it ‘tests’ the show could be picked up for the 2013-14 season.

Samuel Baum (creator of Lie To Me) is writing and producing the pilot for CBS TV Studios and CBS Television.  Kathryn spent 7 years with CBS in Cold Case.  Beth Riesgraf (Leverage) and Katherine McNamara (Kickin’ It) are also set to star as another doctor and Sherman’s daughter respectively.

Rod Lurie is scheduled to direct the pilot, which may further explain Kathryn’s involvement beyond the CBS connection.  Kathryn has worked with Rod several times already on films like The Contender and Resurrecting The Champ.  In fact for a while Kathryn had had a role in all of Rod’s features.

Fingers crossed (but not too tightly, doctors orders :-) ) for Kathryn returning to the small screen.

Cold Case S04E14 – 8:03am HD Screencaps

Cold_Case_S04E14_lilly_134It’s a little while before we start KM UK’s Summer Of HD for 2013 but we are going to take a quick trip back to the season that formed the basis of the 2011 version.

Two years ago the Summer Of HD covered Cold Case season 4 but there were a few gaps.  We managed to fill a couple of the holes last spring (here and here) but there was still one left.  At the time we filled with some promos and on-set photos but didn’t manage to bring you new HD screencaps to go with them.  We can correct that omission now.

Episode 14 of Cold Case‘s fourth season was called 8:03am and was a more Kat Miller-centric (Tracie Thoms) episode than normal so Lilly was a little in the background.  The case involves two separate shootings of a child at their schools linked by the time of day in the title.  Kat was the first officer on the scene of one them.

134 HD (720p) Lilly screencaps from the episode can now be found in the Gallery.

There will be more news on the KM UK Summer Of HD for 2013 in a few weeks.  Stay tuned.

Kathryn Missed Out On Podium In French GP

rtl_le_grand_prix_des_series_tv_2013_150x94Back at the beginning of January we reported that the French TV station RTL and the weekly Télé 2 semaines magazine were running various polls to determine the fans’ favourite actors, actresses and TV shows.

On Monday the results were posted and it was, sadly, not good news for Kathryn.

The foreign actress category that Kathryn featured in was won by Stana Katic from Castle.  She took the prize by 4.5% from Jennifer Morrison of Once Upon A Time.  Kathryn didn’t make the top 3.  And we thought the French people really liked her.

Nathon Fillon, also of Castle, took first place in the equivalent male category, beating out competition from Hugh Laurie (House) and Simon Baker (The Mentalist).  Clearly the French people do like Castle, and why not, it is a very good show.

However, Esprits Criminels, which we believe is Criminal Minds, just pipped Castle to the foreign TV show award by 0.5%.  So close!  As Richard Castle would probably say.

You can find all the results on the RTL website.

The Sweeter Side Of Ratings

The Futon Critic website has published Nielsen audience figures covering the 19th of January 2013 on cable TV in the US.  The night that included première broadcast of Kathryn’s TV movie The Sweeter Side Of Life.

We can’t claim to fully understand the Nielsen numbers and methods but here they are as reported for TSSOL:

  • 1.975 million viewers, #5; 0.366 million adults 18-49 (0.3 rating), #9

In fact the numbers are fairly meaningless without some context.  The previous weekend’s Hallmark Channel movie premiere (12 January 2013) was a film called Nearlyweds, starring Danielle Panabaker and Naomi Judd.  That film’s figures were:

  • 1.323 million viewers, #3; 0.297 million adults 18-49 (0.2 rating), #6

Poster 003As you can see TSSOL got over 650,000 more viewers and a 23% higher rating in the, what for some reason is seen as the most important, “key demographic” 18-49 year old age group.  We don’t believe that the repeat showings, straight afterwards and since, are included.

The relative positions in the rankings (TSSOL: #5 and #9, Nearlyweds: #3 and #6) don’t paint such a rosy picture though.  However, the Lifetime channel’s screening of a drama and documentary about the Casey Anthony trial (a mother charged with the murder of her 2 year old daughter in 2008 which became a huge news story in 2011) took the first and third slots, pushing TSSOL down two from where it would otherwise have been.  A few other shows up against TSSOL got large numbers in the “key demo” but were lower overall adding to that #9.

Congratulations to all involved in The Sweeter Side Of Life on its success.

You can read the Futon Critic numbers in full here and here.
