A body turns up in the exam room of Frannie (Philly PD’s answer to Dr Maura Isles, played by Susan Chuang).  When the dead woman’s son comes to claim the body he denies it is his mother.  Now we have case of identity theft, a mystery dead body, and a cold case from 1954.

Back then the woman, Bettie Petrowski, was suffering from bipolar disorder and was committed (see what they did there?) to a mental institution as she was considered a danger to herself and others, including her young son.

In the end we get a tragic tale and a damning indictment of the way mental health problems were treated not that long ago.  It would be nice to say we’ve moved on since then…

This episode of Cold Case had quite a guest cast list with Natasha Gregson Wagner (Two Girls and a Guy) and Diane Ladd (Chinatown) both starring.  Also, not only did Susan Chuang make one of her occasional appearances but so did Kevin McCorkle as Det Gil Sherman.  In fact we saw both Gil and Josie Sutton (Sarah Brown) for the final time in this one.

Is One Night a fan favourite?  It puts you through the emotional wringer, covering some dark ground on the way to the happy conclusion.

The episode, number 16 of Cold Case‘s third season, is one of only 16 written by Veena Sud during her involvement with the show’s first five seasons.  Veena also produced over 60 episodes.  Since Cold Case Veena has gone on to develop, executive produce, and write for the American version of the drama series The Killing, which recently concluded with a short 4th season released on Netflix.  As an aside Veena wrote and directed a short film called One Night back in 2000.  It is not related in any way to this episode of Cold Case.

One Night is markedly different from most other Cold Case episodes in that it becomes a new and active case.  A hot one.  A man who won’t identify himself walks into the squad room and confesses to burying alive a teenage boy in 1980.  His body was discovered and it remained an unsolved crime.  Then he says there is a newly interred boy, likely still alive.  Much of the rest of the episode is just Lilly and “John Doe”, played by the always busy Zeljko Ivanek (Heroes, Damages, Argo), either side of the table in the interrogation room.  Tense stuff.

Will Lilly get the truth out of “John Doe” and rescue his latest victim in time?  Did I mention the happy conclusion earlier?

A Perfect Day is often cited as one of the fan’s favourite Cold Case episodes.  The US audience figures from the original broadcast back that up with the episode getting over 19 million viewers, the highest the series ever got.  That said, there seemed to be a rise in the figures at that time of year (late November) most years.  My guess would be in coincided with the Thanksgiving holidays, with lots of people at home with family.

A Perfect Day is a perfect storm for Lilly as it includes young sisters with a mother struggling in an abusive relationship.  With her own experience, and the likely reasons she became a police officer, Det Rush is always going to be touched by a story like this one.  Meredith Monroe (probably best known for playing the troubled Andie McPhee on Dawson’s Creek) is the mother in 1965.  It is one of her daughters whose body is found in the present day (2005).  It’s a heart wrencher.

On a positive note Detective Kat Miller (as played by Tracie Thoms) gets offered a permanent position with the squad by Lt. Stillman in this one, having helped out in the previous episode/case Honor.
