Or should that be “upcoming shorts”?
This Sunday (8th September 2013) sees the short film The Coin screened at Los Angeles International Short Film Festival (aka the LA Shorts Fest for… short).
Fabien Martorell’s film is one of seven films in the enigmatically/practically named ‘Program 16’ screening starting on Sunday afternoon at 3:15. It shares that bill with three dramas and a comedy from the USA, and a comedy and a drama from Germany. Some of the many other films to be shown at the festival are grouped under titles such as “Horror Program” and “Song & Dance Program”. Clearly the septet that includes The Coin defy such easy labelling
The Coin; starring Christopher Lloyd (Back To The Future), Kathryn, Will Kemp (Mindhunters) and Jack Ryan Shepherd; premièred at the Palm Springs International ShortFest back in June. Towards the end of this month it will appearing in the line-up of the Big Bear Lake International Film Festival.
The 9 minute long film revolves around the young son (Shepherd) of a stressed mother (Morris) and his encounter with a homeless man (Lloyd) outside a small convenience store. It was shot over a 4 day period in July of 2012.
Check out the film’s trailer and a collection of on set photos (such as the one on the right) in the Gallery.
More details about LA Shorts Fest and all the films being shown are available at the official website.
The recent update of the Official KM website brought to light a couple of public appearances by Kathryn that had got by us all. The occasions themselves passed with little note by the wider press too, perhaps overshadowed by the main events they are linked to. No information, such as basic when and where, was given about the two photos. KM UK can fill in the blanks for you all.
The website captioned the photo you can see on the left “Babies’ First Premiere!” It is amazing how many errors you can make in just three words. The apostrophe was right though, so score one for punctuation. Kathryn in her golden dress was at the annual MPTF “Evening Before The Primetime Emmy Awards” event. In 2012 it was held on 21st of September. So… not a première, and as it was 11 months ago the “babies” part is a bit of a stretch too.
Moving on to number two, eyes right. This is from another MPTF event, this one is called “Night Before the Oscars”. It is also an annual event held before a big awards ceremony. This year the Oscars were on Sunday the 24th February so this appearance was on the 23rd.
The MPTF, or Motion Picture & Television Fund is a charity aimed primarily at helping members of the entertainment industry who fall on hard times. Unlike many professions TV and movie jobs, both in front of an behind the camera, are short term and lacking access to health care schemes available through employers. You can read more about the work of the MPTF on their website here.
The pre-Emmy and pre-Oscar event photos are now in their respective albums in the Gallery.
I’ll sneak in one other quick update, which would have been more appropriately posted in yesterday’s photoshoot addition. It’s one more photo from what we call the “Official website photoshoot”. A larger version of the image you see on the right has now joined its own kind in the Gallery.
No, it’s not a convention only for those deficient in the trouser/pant* department. Nor does it involve lashing anything to an ‘ort’s fest’, what ever an ort or its fest may be. It’s, and you should probably be sitting down for this, a festival of short films in Los Angeles.
Once again the director/writer/producer of the short film The Coin, Fabien Martorell, has let KM UK know via the modern communication medium that is Twitter that the film has made the selection another film festival. This time it the 17th annual Los Angeles International Short Film Festival.
The Shorts Fest takes place between the 5th and the 12th of September at the Laemmle NoHo 7 theatre in North Hollywood. The exact date of The Coin’s screen(s) is not known at this time. We’ll bring you more when we know it.
You can read more about the LA Shorts Fest the official website. If you’re a local, or a visitor at the time, and are able to attend please let us know what it is like.
Thanks once more to Fabien for contacting KM UK. Best of British to him and all involved.
On the right, and in the Gallery, is a large sized version of the festival’s poster. It has the slogan “Once upon a time, The End.”
* delete as geography dictates
Or, to give it its full title the ‘CBS, CW, CBS Television Studios & Showtime TCA Party’. Or, to give it a fuller title still, that would be the ‘Columbia Broadcasting System, CBS/Warner, Columbia Broadcasting System Television Studios & Showtime Televisions Critics Association’. But what about the CBS in the middle of that? Do these initialisations never end?!?
The Television Critics Association events take place twice a year to promote new shows across the various networks. The American TV system does seem to be very organised about such things, following a set pattern annually.
If the CBS pilot show The Surgeon General, which Kathryn starred in, had been picked up to series for the fall 2013 season we could very well have seen Kathryn at last week’s Summer TCA. Sadly neither was to be.
Instead we’re going to look back to 2009 for a little Gallery update. I last posted about this public appearance back in 2010 in a wider update covering the same year.
Four years ago Kathryn was not, as far as I can tell, in Pasadena (where these TCA events take place) to push Cold Case specifically. She did attend the after-party as one of the CBS family. These photos are from the red carpet arrivals. Yes, yes, as you can see below the carpet was not red
The four new photos you see around this post now join the existing collection in the Gallery.
Director/writer/producer Fabien Martorell has let KM UK know via a Tweet that his short film The Coin has been selected for inclusion in this year’s Big Bear Lake International Film Festival.
Big Bear Lake is high (6750ft / 2060m above sea level) in the hills of southern California, north-east of Los Angeles. The annual festival covers all types of films has been running since 2000 and will on a long weekend late in September (Friday 20th to Sunday 22nd).
The complete list of films due to be screened this year will be officially announced in a couple of weeks but Fabien has given us the news early, as he did for the Palm Springs International Film Fest back in June.
The Coin is a short film starring Kathryn Morris and Christopher Lloyd (Back To The Future). It was filmed last summer and is about a young boy meeting a homeless man at a shop. Kathryn plays the boy’s very stressed mother.
You can read more about the Big Bear Lake International Film Festival at the event’s website. If you are able to attend do let us know how it goes.
Thanks to Fabien for letting us know about this news, we wish him and the rest of the cast and crew all the best with it.
