Happy (is that right?) Halloween everyone.
It’s the end of the month so it is time to update ourselves on the on-going careers of the rest of the Cold Case cast.
I say on-going careers but we’ll start with a brief pause in one. As suspected in the previous update it was announced that the TV comedy drama series BrainDead, which starred Danny Pino (Scotty Valens in CC) as a senator, will not be on the receiving end of a season two order. That’s a shame because it was a very good show made even better by the fun and inventive ‘previously on…’ songs at the beginning of each episode. As things stand there is no news on Danny’s next project, though based on history something will be announced within hours of this post being published. Look for CCCC-up November 2016 for that news 
Last month I covered Tracie Thoms (Kat Miller on CC) treading the boards again in a revival of the musical Falsettos. The Broadway show had its public opening last Thursday (27th Oct) night at the Walter Kerr Theatre. Tracie plays Dr Charlotte and stars alongside Stephanie J. Block, Christian Borle, Andrew Rannells, Anthony Rosenthal, Brandon Uranowitz, and Betsy Wolfe. Good news for those that would like to experience the show but can’t make it to New York: the day before the première it was announced that a double-CD recorded by the cast will be released.
Before raising the rafters Tracie must have filmed a role in new movie The Basement, a horror/thriller starring Mischa Barton (The O.C.), Cayleb Long (Ascent To Hell), and Jackson Davis (Lonelygirl15). It involves the kidnapping of a rock star by a serial killer. Tracie is ‘Lauren’. No release date beyond ‘2017’ has been issued.
Back in August I reported that the film The Watcher would be broadcast by the Lifetime network in October. It was. Next month it is due to be available on Netflix. In the film Erin Cahill (Jen the Pink Power Ranger) and Edi Gathegi (The Blacklist) have bought their dream home together. Turns out to be more of a nightmare. Tracie is ‘Amanda’.
In mid-November Tracie must be getting a day off from her work in Falsettos. Where as most of us would take the opportunity to spend the whole day sleeping, that’s not Tracie’s way. She’s going to spend the 24 hours making another play, from scratch. Its another in the ’24 Hour Plays’ series which happen in various parts of the country during the year. This is Broadway’s annual version. A whole load of actors with a bunch of writers and directors will put on 6 short plays. It is all in aid of raising money to help aspiring young actors, writers, producers, and directors learn their craft.
Occasionally we veer off the Cold Case cast theme a little to encompass some other significant people involved in the show. One of those is Veena Sud who was a writer and producer on many episodes. Veena went on to have much success in those same roles with the America version of The Killing. Now she has a new drama in the works for Netflix. It is called Seven Seconds and is based on a Russian movie called The Major. A senior member of the police service accidentally kills a boy whilst driving his car. Abusing his position he covers the crime up to save himself. The 10 part drama series transplants the story to Jersey City and includes the all too familiar element of tension between a predominantly white police force and the black populus. David Lyons (Game Of Silence) and Beau Knapp (The Nice Guys) are set to star.
It’s still February, right? (Déjà vu?) Just when you think you’ve got used to the 28 day long month they go and throw in an extra 24 hours. Typical! It’s like they do it every four years (ish) just to catch us out!
As last month’s CCCC-up (where we look at the on-going careers of the Cold Case cast) was a little late and a lot rushed (no pun intended) I managed to miss out a few things. I’ll try and do a bit better this time. No promises though.
It was all about Tracie Thoms (Kat Miller in CC) last time and it was some of her stuff I forgot so I’ll start with her to redeem myself.
9 Rides (aka Nine Rides) is by writer/director Matthew A. Cherry (Almost Home) and is a feature film about the very much vehicle of the moment (pun very much intended) an Uber driver and his News Year’s Eve. For those of you living under a rock Uber is a effectively a taxi service run by individuals under the control of a smartphone app. If you don’t know a smartphone is… Customers use the app to request a car. Uber drivers can choose which jobs to respond to. Despite the ‘indie’ image Uber is a well funded operation which takes a cut from each fare. They operate in cities all over the world, with a lot of opposition from local taxi services. It is not without controversy to say the least. I digress. Dorian Missick (Southland) is the unnamed ‘Driver’ who receives some very bad news. Tracie is listed in the cast as ‘Fiancee’. The film is due to première at SXSW festival in March (11-19th). There is a Kickstarter page raising money to help with the final post-production elements with more details and a teaser video HERE.
Love. Remember when that was all the rage two weeks ago? Well, just after that Netflix released the Judd Apatow (Knocked Up) / Lesley Arfin (Brooklyn Nine-Nine) / Paul Rust (I Love You, Beth Cooper)-created comedy series Love starring the aforementioned Rust and Gillian Jacobs (Community). Tracie stars as Susan in five of the 10 episodes in the first season. The show has already been signed up for a second run. I hear good things about it so it might be worth checking out if you can.
As is the way of these things a few days after the last CCCC-up news broke of a Lifetime network movie called The Real MVP: The Wanda Pratt Story being put into production. It is about the mother of NBA star Kevin Durant. I don’t know basketball but I gather Kevin is a big deal in the sport. The film is about the struggles of his mother Wanda to raise two sons alone. Apparently Kevin famously dedicated his 2014 winning of the ‘Most Valuable Player’ award to his mother calling her “the real MVP”. Tracie plays a close friend of Cassandra Freeman’s (Single Ladies) Wanda. Queen Latifah (Bringing Down The House) is producing. Filming was already under way when this story appeared at the beginning of February. It is expected to be first aired in time for the American version of Mother’s Day on the 8th of May.
To mark Black History Month (February in the US) the Word Theatre in LA put on a free show called And All That Jazz. Tracie was amongst the many stars at the Hall Of Liberty performing an of ‘inspiring evening of stories, poetry and memoir’ about the jazz greats. As we all know Tracie is very accomplished singer as well as actor.
Again, a few days after the delayed Jan CCCC-up it was announced that the new comedy thriller BrainDead, from the makers of the soon to end The Good Wife, had signed Tony Shalhoub (Monk) as another lead actor. The show, set in political world of Washington DC but with zombies, was first covered in the Dec ’15 CCCC-up when Danny Pino (Scotty Valens in CC) was added to the cast. The show is due to première this coming summer on the CBS network.
It’s been a busy couple of weeks for John Finn (John Stillman in CC). He had guest starring roles in recent episodes of The Good Wife and Elementary (the US TV modern take on Sherlock Holmes). I can’t comment on his roles in either show.
Stretching our remit (as we do occasionally) to stretch the piece we note that regular Cold Case writer and producer Veena Sud (US version of The Killing) has been chosen to write an American remake of the German movie We Monsters. The original film is new, having had a North American première at the influential Toronto Film Festival just last September and centres around recently separated parents forced to get back together to help their teenage daughter cover up a murder.
Squeaking in at the last minute again it’s June’s CCCC-up, the monthly post where KM UK looks at the continuing work of the Cold Case cast members that aren’t Kathryn.
I try to be a gentleman and always allow ladies to go first, but with the CCCC-up that would mean Tracie Thoms (Kat Miller on CC) would be leading the way every month so I try to let each have a turn. This time we’ll give Tracie her go at the top. In March I posted about the Fun Size Horror short films done for various websites for Halloween 2014 getting a DVD/VOD release in May. At the time I mentioned that plans were in hand for a new set of similarly scary fare for this year. Would you Adam & Eve it, a couple of weeks ago Tracie completed filming on a segment which will no doubt be released at the appropriate time in the autumn. Before completing that project Tracie was involved in the filming of a new webseries called Dinner At Lola. People from the ‘business that is show’ discuss the ‘business that is show’ over dinner (without the show).
One of our less frequent stars of the CCCC-ups is the gentle giant that is Mr Thom Barry (Will Jeffries on CC). Thom recently wrapped on a new movie called Henry Joseph Church, not to be confused with another film Thom is in called Richard Peter Johnson (which seems to be stuck in post-production hell). HJC, previously known as Cook, stars Eddie Murphy (Bowfinger) and Natascha McElhone (Californication) amongst others. Eddie is a cook. A young girl and her mother some how ‘inherit’ said cook. The director, Bruce Beresford, previously made Driving Miss Daisy, which may give us an idea of the tone. Thom is credited as ‘Frankie Twiggs’, who sounds like a 50s gangster from the east end of London. No further info at this time.
Veena Sud is a name that most of you will recognise. Occasionally I stretch the third ‘C’ in CCCC-up to include a few other key people involved with CC. Veena was a writer and producer on Cold Case across several seasons and she went on to do the same for the American version of the drama The Killing. There is no news on the actual project yet, but Veena has, in the last few days, signed a development deal with Fox 21 TV Studios to create new a drama for cable television.
 Looking back at last month’s Cold Case Cast Catch-up (aka CCCC-up), as I do to refresh my memory of upcoming things and check for updates, I spotted a lot of (now corrected) typos. Not my best work. This month I’ll try to make fewer mistooks as we look at the on-going careers of the other stars of Cold Case
The one bit of Danny Pino (Scotty Valens on CC) news last time out was his nomination in the 2014 Imagen Awards, which celebrate the portrayal of Latino culture in the media. Danny is up for his role on the long-running TV series Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. The show is due to start its 16th season, Danny’s 4th, in the autumn. The Imagen awards are taking place on Friday (August 1st). Good luck to all those nominated, especially Danny.
It looks like the indie movie Death Valley, which sees Jeremy Ratchford (Nick Vera on CC) don a cop uniform, was screened for a select few people earlier this month. So far there is no actual release date listed for the film. Hopefully the screening will boost the film’s profile and help with distribution etc.
At the time of writing there has been no sign of Thom Barry (Will Jeffries on CC) making his debut on the TNT drama series Perception. We reported last month that Thom had scored a recurring role as a senior FBI field office boss. Perception stars Will & Grace‘s Eric McCormack as neuropsychiatrist with schizophrenia Daniel Pierce who assists the FBI with difficult cases through his ex-student, and now FBI Special Agent, Katie Moretti played by Rachael Leigh Cook (Josie & The Pussycats). This week’s episode was number seven of the season’s 12 so there are still a few to go. Maybe next week.
The complicated history of the Irish drama An Bronntanas which stars John Finn (John Stillman in CC) is becoming a little clearer. Made last year as a five part drama series it was due to be shown early in 2014. That time came and went. A couple of weeks ago (as reported previously) a 2 hour film edit was screened on the closing night of the Galway Film Fleadh (festival). Apparently it went down a storm (pun very much intended). Now it is looking like the 5 episode version will be broadcast over the Xmas period on the TG4 Irish TV network that part-funded the production.
I doubt those of you interested need to be reminded by me but writer and producer on CC Veena Sud‘s follow-up show The Killing will start the end on Friday. The drama, which was on the AMC network for its first three seasons, was picked up by the Netflix streaming service for one more short six episode run. After a very successful first season the show has been a mixed bag for viewers who, I’m sure, hope it goes out on a high. Of course if it is a success for Netflix (they never release audience figures) who knows if it really will be the last that will be seen of it. On a side note: just last week the lead actress Mireille Enos (World War Z) gave birth to her second child with husband Alan Ruck (Spin City). Congratulations to them both.
It almost feels wrong to do so but I am going get through a CCCC-up without mentioning Tracie Thoms (Kat Miller on CC). Damn! So close!
 I’ve left it rather late this month but there is just time to squeeze in our regular post on the careers of the Cold Case cast members that aren’t Kathryn. It’s April so we’ll make this the April update.
In an effort to stop this becoming the Tracie Thoms Twelve Tributes (it’s monthly) or the T4, or 4T, or Double TT (OK, that just got weird 😉 ) we’ll try and up the non-Tracie content this time. It might be difficult though. Don’t worry, we still love you Tracie 😉
Danny Pino (Scotty Valens on CC) is coming to the end of his 3rd season on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. It’s difficult to believe it has been that long already. Makes me feel older just thinking about that. There’s a joke in there somewhere about policeman looking younger every year. So far there is no word on whether L&O:SVU will get another season or not. As we know from Kathryn’s work on Cold Case you do a job on a show like that pretty much at the exclusion of everything else so there is little time for side projects. At the moment there doesn’t appear to anything in the pipeline from Danny. If you want wall-to-wall coverage on Danny’s work check out the great site Danny Pino Online. Going up in rank we’ll move on to John Finn (John Stillman in CC). John is listed as being in the pilot for a possible new CBS TV series based around the machinations of Wall Street. Actor John Cusack (High Fidelity) is set to star and produce. The writers and exec producers from the TV series Justified are also behind the project. Charlie Cox (Boardwalk Empire) leads with David Morse (Treme), Sophie Okonedo (Hotel Rwanda) and Maggie Grace (Taken) co-starring. Morse’s character will be a powerful banker no doubt tapping into the world’s current distrust of financial institutions. Cox is to be an Iraq war vet turned banker, so we know he’ll be a good guy. Okonedo plays an assistant attorney general charged investigating the murky world of money. John Finn’s character is just down as Ritter at the moment. As of now the show is just known as Untitled Wall Street Project and is on IMDb as a “TV movie” which is often the case with pilots for series.
Next we’ll cast (see what I did there?) our net a little wider before pulling it back.
