Phew! Nearly missed it. These 30 day months are tricky little beggars. With the fall (autumn) TV season having now started in the US things are a little quiet on the news front. We’ll do what we can to bring you the latest news of the other Cold Case cast members, but it looks like we’ll be largely relying on Tracie Thoms (Kat Miller in CC) to help fill this month’s report.
Tracie returned to the Fox emergency service-based series 9-1-1. The second season opened with a two-parter which started last Sunday (23rd September) and continued in the show’s normal slot on the following night. It was that latter half that featured Tracie and she is set to continue in episode three tomorrow. A major change for the new run of the drama is the addition of Jennifer Love Hewitt (Ghost Whisperer) to the cast. It is Jennifer’s first major role since a season in Criminal Minds. Her character is helping to fill a gap left by Connie Britton (Nashville) who only had a single year deal, which is unusual in this industry. Apparently Connie could return as a guest in the future though.
I won’t go into detail as they’ve been covered before, but in September Tracie also saw the release of the Hulu series The First and the horror movie The Basement.
In a similar vein I’ll quickly mention that Danny Pino (Scotty Valens in CC) returned to the small screen in Mayans MC earlier in September.
A quick reminder that John Finn (John Stillman in CC) stars in the new season of The Walking Dead which starts next Sunday (7th October).
Although the focus of these posts is the main cast of CC that aren’t Kathryn, we do occasionally stretch our remit a little to include other people connected to the show. As the creator, writer and executive producer Meredith Stiehm is very much one such person. After holding similar positions for the US version of The Bridge and early seasons of Homeland, Meredith seems to have taken a step back from the coal face to work within the Writers Guild Of America. The typewriter is going to be dusted off soon though as it has been announced that Meredith will be adapting Cristina Alger’s 2018 hit book The Banker’s Wife into a drama series as well as exec producing. The project is being lead by actor Rosamund Pike (Gone Girl) who will star and also produce. Apparently the plot revolves around two women searching for answers in the world of finance after a plane crash raises serious questions. Things have only recently been started on this so it will likely be a while before we hear more.
July’s CCCC-up promised little due to the quiet summer months. Despite that, I think we put together a reasonable amount of information. August is also slim pickings for looking at the news of the Cold Case cast’s on-going careers.
Last time we mentioned her (almost) last so it is only fair that this month we let her go first… with The First. July’s CCCC-up finished talking about a new drama series coming to the streaming service Hulu. It is called The First and stars Sean Penn (Dead Man Walking) and Natascha McElhone (The Truman Show) and Melissa George (Hunted), and Tracie Thoms (Kat Miller in CC). The 8 episode drama about the first manned (and womaned) mission to Mars is due to for launch all at once on the 14th of September (a Friday, in case you’re interested). Previously I posted a link to a teaser trailer that had been out a week. Now we have a proper trailer only a couple of days old. See it HERE on YouTube. Tracie features, very briefly, around 55 seconds in. Expect to see Tracie in two episodes.
On that very same day in September the horror movie The Basement, which also sees Tracie in a small supporting role, gets its limited cinematic release. There is a trailer but I’m not going to link to it (you don’t need to see it) and Tracie is not in it anyway.
As there is just a few days to go now there has been quite a lot of press activity regarding Mayans MC, the FX network drama spin-off from Sons Of Anarchy. The new show which stars Danny Pino (Scotty Valens in CC) starts next Tuesday, the 4th of September. We’ve covered Mayans MC here on KM UK quite a lot already for those looking for a bit more info.
Let’s sneak in a quick mention of one of our less frequent fliers (because she sort of doesn’t fit these posts really): Veena Sud (producer & writer on CC). It was back in April’s CCCC-up that we mentioned Veena was re-uniting with her The Killing star Mireille Enos for a new film called Between Earth And Sky. It has been renamed to The Lie and has featured in a list of projects recognised for being gender balanced. Women in Film, the Sundance Institute, and IMDbPro have formed a group called ReFrame to do just that. Veena wrote and directed The Lie.
England actually had something that could really be called a summer. It was seriously hot for a couple of weeks. It being July, the entertainment industry is relative cool on the news front though, but here is the latest update on the Cold Case cast members that aren’t Kathryn.
John Finn (John Stillman in CC) has been announced has a significant new cast member of the long-running AMC series The Walking Dead. Season 9 starts in October and is due to see some major changes in the acting line-up. John will play Earl, a blacksmith, and Brett Butler (Grace Under Fire) will be his wife Tammy Rose. Minority Report star Samantha Morton also joins the show as the leader of a new faction.
These round-ups are collections of news from the just-ending month. They are not exactly ‘breaking news’ but we appear to have done just that in the June edition. A few hours before posting the previous CCCC-up, Danny Pino (Scotty Valens in CC) announced on social media that he would be starring in the 3rd season of the Netflix comedy One Day At A Time. It was a couple of days before the more traditional news media picked up on the story. Yeah us! Later in the month it was confirmed that Stephanie Beatriz and Melissa Fumero from Brooklyn Nine-Nine will also guest star, alongside singer Gloria Estefan. The show returns in 2019.
Just over a month to go until the new FX series Mayans MC debuts and a trailer has been released. See it HERE on YouTube. Danny stars in the spin-off of Sons Of Anarchy. It will launch on the 4th of September.
We’ve been mentioning the movie The Basement now since 2016. The Mischa Barton starring horror/thriller, which includes Tracie Thoms (Kat Miller in CC), has had a tortuous (pun intended!) history but in April it was given a September release date. We now know it will get a theatrical (as in, in cinemas) outing and be made available on VOD services on the 15th of September.
Back in March Tracie’s episodes in season 3 of UnREAL appeared on the Lifetime channel. By then it was known that there was only to be one more season of the show and that it had already been filmed. It is not expected to be broadcast by Lifetime until next year. However, it was also said that the streaming service Hulu would release the show before then. Much to many peoples’ surprise that happened a couple of weeks ago.
Speaking of Hulu, they have a new original drama series called The First due to start in mid-September. The 8 parter is about the first manned mission to the planet Mars. Channel 4 in the UK are also involved so it is likely to get a release here on that station. The show is by the House Of Cards creator of Beau Willimon. Sean Penn (Mystic River) and Natascha McElhone (Designated Survivor) lead a cast which includes Melissa George (Alias). Tracie is down as being in two episodes. There is a trailer for the The First HERE on YouTube.
We don’t often get to mention Jeremy Ratchford (Nick Vera in CC) in these CCCC-ups. This one is no exception but he did get his own special post at the weekend due to an interview he’d done in which he mentioned Kathryn in a couple of his answers.
It’s that time again when we reach the end of the month and take a look back at recent news about the other cast members of Cold Case.
To begin with we go to Danny Pino (Scotty Valens in CC). On several occasions we’ve had reason to mention Mayans MC (motorcycle club). This is a TV show on the FX channel in America which is a spin-off of the popular Sons Of Anarchy. Mayans is set in the same ‘universe’ as SOA but is largely separate. It starts a few years after the end of the original show and apparently makes references to the events that happened at its close. At the beginning of June a panel of the cast and crew attended the ATX Television Festival in Austin, Texas. Danny was there along with the creator Kurt Sutter. A clip of the new programme was shown, followed by a discussion about the series by those assembled. Just a couple of days ago it was announced that FX will begin broadcasting Mayans MC on the 4th of September after a debut at the San Diego Comic-Con in late July. Expect another discussion panel there. Of note is that Kurt and Danny crossed paths during Danny’s brief stint on The Shield. Kurt wrote one of the episodes Danny starred in.
Danny appears to have announced is own participation in the Netflix comedy One Day At A Time a few hours ago (at time of publishing). The power of social media. ODAAT has so far had two seasons, each of 13 episodes, released in January of this year and last. The show is about a divorced mother of two sharing a house with her mother. Justina Machado (Six Feet Under, Cold Case episode ‘The Good Death’) stars as the mother, Rita Moreno (Oz) is the grandmother. Danny is set to join the cast as the brother of Justina’s character. A multi-generational comedy is hardly a new idea and in this case that is even more true than normal as this is based on a show of the same name from the late-seventies/early eighties. The original ran for 9 seasons on CBS. A major change for the update is the shift to it being based around a Cuban-American family living in Los Angeles. Following the normal pattern of release dates for the previous two seasons, expect every episode of season 3 to be available in one go via the streaming service early next in 2019.
Some how we got through the May 2018 CCCC-up without mentioning Tracie Thoms (Kat Miller in CC) and we survived! I’m not sure we could have survived two in a row! The chance of not discussing the always-working Tracie for so long is of ‘hell freezing over’ proportions. But we could do with a bit of cooling down here in the UK, with a lengthy period of warm and humid weather making things uncomfortable for many.
After a premiere at the SXSW film festival in March we recently had the release of the trailer for the comedy short film Are We Good Parents? starring Sean Maguire (Once Upon A Time) and Tracie. You can watch all 40 seconds of the already award-winning film trailer HERE on Vimeo. Tracie and Sean are parents to a teenage girl who they had long believed was gay.
Are we seeing a new trend in titles? Tracie has joined a stellar cast for a new 10 part drama series for Apple (yes, the iPhone maker) called Are You Sleeping. I’ve not seen it written anywhere with a question mark so I assume that is the way it is supposed to be. Check out this cast list: Octavia Spencer (Hidden Figures), Elizabeth Perkins (Weeds), Mekhi Phifer (ER), Lizzy Caplan (Cloverfield), Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad), Ron Cephas Jones (This Is Us), and Tracie, amongst others. Reese Witherspoon (Election) is involved on the other side of the camera via her production camera. Based on a novel by Kathleen Barber looks at the increasing interest in podcasts (from the company that effectively named the medium) about true crime stories, and the impact that has on the justice system.
A quick update for April 2018 on the on-going careers of the other main Cold Case cast members.
Back in October last year we reported that Danny Pino (Scotty Valens in CC) had joined a pilot for a new show called Mayans MC. This was a sort of spin-off from the popular Sons Of Anarchy series, which came to an end in 2014. Mayans MC was to be a very separate show but based in the same universe as SOA. There had already been a pilot filmed but it had undergone significant enough revisions to the story to warrant a new pilot to assess the changes. Danny was added to the v2 pilot. Since then we’ve not heard a lot about Mayans MC. Worryingly in the small pieces of news about new cast members Danny was not mentioned. Further changes could have been made since the new pilot. We didn’t know. The good news is that a couple of weeks ago new that The Last O.G. star Gino Vento was to join the show. Articles described Gino’s character as a childhood friend of Danny’s Miguel Galindo. That’s good news as it re-confirms Danny’s involvement. Later there was new that veteran actor Tony Plana (Ugly Betty, Madam Secretary) was also to become a recurring character. The pedigree and the cast suggest Mayans MC will be a strong show.
Not sure when this appeared in Tracie Thoms’ (Kat Miller in CC) credits on IMDb but I’ve just seen a project listed called Emmett. There is not a lot of information about this comedy film but it is a combination of live-action and animation, and it features the young actor Miles Brown (Black-ish) and Rita Wilson (Girls, wife of Tom Hanks). It is possible the project was completed in 2016, or it could be still in pre-production, depending on what source you believe. Either way I don’t think the Bridget Stokes directed film has been released yet. The story is said to be about Emmett (Miles) teaming up with a retired person (possibly Rita) to solve a crime and keep his family together.
Back in October, and I mean 2016 this time, we reported that Tracie had filmed a horror filmed called The Basement. In the fast moving world of entertainment things can sometimes take a long time. At the time ‘2017’ was the best we could do in terms of a release date. Despite receiving a première at the Shriekfest horror movie event in October (I do mean the one in 2017 this time) there wasn’t sign of movement on a general release. Now that has changed a little to a limited launch in September 2018. More when we hear it.
The Saturday before last (21st April) Tracie returned to the For The Record fold for a performance apparently held at a house in the Hollywood Hills for live streaming on social media. The show involves mostly singing songs from movie soundtracks. Previously they focused on Quentin Tarantino movies as they usually have a notable collection of songs. This time the repertoire includes music from Black Panther as well. In the last few days Tracie was at John Hopkins University with the Theatre Of War group to perform a sermon by Martin Luther King Jr. called ‘The Drum Major Instinct’. The university was running a series events under the title ‘Race In America’.
Occasionally we stretch our remit to include a few other key people connected to Cold Case. Writer/director/producer Veena Sud is one them. Post-CC Veena had a lot of success with a remake of a Danish drama series The Killing starring Mireille Enos. It looks like the two ladies have reunited for a new family drama film called Between Earth And Sky (or maybe Between The Earth And Sky), which may still be a working title. If that isn’t exciting enough for The Killing fans this new film also includes another star of that show: Peter Sarsgaard (Garden State). Filming is said to have started in late January in Toronto. In slightly less good news Veena’s series Seven Seconds will not be returning for a second series. There were thoughts that the show could continue for multiple seasons but Netflix has decided not to go forward with it.
