Some of you got through Thanksgiving (I guess we all survived that). New traditions Black Friday and Cyber Monday have gone passed to. Can you deal with November’s CCCC-up? Let’s see what happening in the careers of the Cold Case cast (and occasionally crew) that aren’t Kathryn.
There is always a concern with these updates that things will be too quiet so there will be nothing to say. Luckily, with a number of people to talk about, and one of them being Tracie Thoms, there is always something. Nearly.
John Finn (John Stillman in CC) has featured a more in recent months than is usual. His joining the hit drama series The Walking Dead in a recurring role was much of it. Just this week the show ended the first half of season 9. It will rise from the dead (see what I did there?) with part two in February 2019.
The new news regarding John is a role in a new mini-series about the controversial (I think that’s the way we have to phrase these things) TV mogul Roger Ailes. He was the, lets say, man behind the, what we’ll call, TV channel Fox News. He had a clear vision for what the channel should do and how to do it. He succeeded. Ailes became headline news himself with allegations about his behaviour towards female staff members, including the on-screen talent such as Gretchen Carlson. Ailes died in 2017, a year after resigning because of the allegations. There is currently a movie in the works about Ailes starring John Lithgow, Charlize Theron, Nicole Kidman, and Margot Robbie. The project our John is involved in, however, is an 8-part series for the Showtime network called The Loudest Voice In Room. In this one Russell Crowe (Gladiator) is Ailes and co-star Naomi Watts (King Kong) is Carlson. John is listed as a ‘Jack Welch’. It is not clear who that is to me, but the most prominent person, and most likely candidate, is the former CEO of the massive General Electric corporation. He was at the top of the company for 20 years from 1981 so would definitely have a contemporary of Ailes. Seth McFarlane (Family Guy) and Sienna Miller (Layer Cake) are also set to co-star. Release is expected next year sometime.
You could normally create a magazine called ‘What Tracie Did This Month’ or ‘Thoms Monthly’ and rarely be stuck for content. This month’s edition would be lacking a little in original content so instead you’d run a lengthy feature about the movie of the musical Rent. It was the film’s 13th anniversary this month and Tracie Thoms (Kat Miller in CC) no doubt enjoyed the fans reminders of that. Apart from the though that it was thirteen years ago!
Stepping up to the plate to help out with some extra count is one of less regular guests and outlier in the whole Cold Case cast theme. According to a news site called SneakPeek, the Cold Case producer/writer Veena Sud is set to direct a remake of the Alfred Hitchcock movie Suspicion. Apparently Veena is also adapting the screenplay herself.
We all know Cold Case as starring Kathryn Morris. It’s why so many of you are on this site. However, we can’t forget that Kathryn was part of an ensemble cast that the show couldn’t exist without. This is the latest in KM UK’s series of monthly posts, known as CCCC-up, looking at the on-going post-Cold Case careers of Tracie, Danny, Jeremy, John, and Thom. Let’s see what we’ve unearthed in the month of October.
Regular readers will know that Tracie Thoms (Kat Miller in CC) features a lot in this posts due her prodigious work rate. It seems that barely a day goes by when she isn’t performing somewhere. Another frequent occurrence in these round-ups is a big story breaking soon after going to press. Two days after September’s CCCC-up news broke that Tracie would be starring in a new film called Straight Up. James Sweeney writes and stars in this rom-com movie with Katie Findlay (The Carrie Diaries) about a gay man and his female soul-mate. Filming is said to have already completed and taken place in LA. Release date is as yet unknown.
Tracie’s guest-starring role in the Fox TV multi-emergency service-based drama series 9-1-1 has continued this past month with several re-appearances as Karen Wilson.
Back in July’s CCCC-up I predicted (with good reason) that the Hulu network drama called The First would be getting an outing here in the UK on our Channel 4. In the past couple of weeks adverts have been broadcast for the series about the first manned mission to Mars. Not sure if it is a clever bit of marketing or not, but the first episode of The First will be shown on the 1st (of November) on the first Channel 4 we have Sean Penn (Mystic River) and Brit Natascha McElhone (Californication) star. Tracie is listed as being in four episodes of the 8 total.
I thought I’d missed this news but it looks like in the past couple of week it became known that the release date of the movie Ad Astra has slipped to May 2019. The Brad Pitt (World War Z) sci-fi film was set to premiere in January but it has been pushed. John Finn (John Stillman in CC) co-stars with Donald Sutherland (The Hunger Games), Tommy Lee Jones (The Fugitive), and Ruth Negga (Preacher). It looks like the January date was not considered very good anyway and pre-Xmas release was expected to get it in a prime position ahead of the Oscars. Commonsense has prevailed and late May is seen as a much more appropriate.
John’s new role in the in long-running The Walking Dead series has continued through October.
Way back in September 2016 I first reported on John Finn starring in a film called Finding Steve McQueen. Filming took place around that time too. A premiere happened at the Monte Carlo Film Festival in March of 2017. There is still no signs of a US general release but IMDb lists tomorrow (1st November) as a release in Portugal of all places.
In the same vain, the FX TV series Mayans MC, which is a sort of prequel to Sons Of Anarchy reached episode 9 just last night (30th Oct). Danny Pino (Scotty Valens in CC) is a regular guest-star.
Phew! Nearly missed it. These 30 day months are tricky little beggars. With the fall (autumn) TV season having now started in the US things are a little quiet on the news front. We’ll do what we can to bring you the latest news of the other Cold Case cast members, but it looks like we’ll be largely relying on Tracie Thoms (Kat Miller in CC) to help fill this month’s report.
Tracie returned to the Fox emergency service-based series 9-1-1. The second season opened with a two-parter which started last Sunday (23rd September) and continued in the show’s normal slot on the following night. It was that latter half that featured Tracie and she is set to continue in episode three tomorrow. A major change for the new run of the drama is the addition of Jennifer Love Hewitt (Ghost Whisperer) to the cast. It is Jennifer’s first major role since a season in Criminal Minds. Her character is helping to fill a gap left by Connie Britton (Nashville) who only had a single year deal, which is unusual in this industry. Apparently Connie could return as a guest in the future though.
I won’t go into detail as they’ve been covered before, but in September Tracie also saw the release of the Hulu series The First and the horror movie The Basement.
In a similar vein I’ll quickly mention that Danny Pino (Scotty Valens in CC) returned to the small screen in Mayans MC earlier in September.
A quick reminder that John Finn (John Stillman in CC) stars in the new season of The Walking Dead which starts next Sunday (7th October).
Although the focus of these posts is the main cast of CC that aren’t Kathryn, we do occasionally stretch our remit a little to include other people connected to the show. As the creator, writer and executive producer Meredith Stiehm is very much one such person. After holding similar positions for the US version of The Bridge and early seasons of Homeland, Meredith seems to have taken a step back from the coal face to work within the Writers Guild Of America. The typewriter is going to be dusted off soon though as it has been announced that Meredith will be adapting Cristina Alger’s 2018 hit book The Banker’s Wife into a drama series as well as exec producing. The project is being lead by actor Rosamund Pike (Gone Girl) who will star and also produce. Apparently the plot revolves around two women searching for answers in the world of finance after a plane crash raises serious questions. Things have only recently been started on this so it will likely be a while before we hear more.
July’s CCCC-up promised little due to the quiet summer months. Despite that, I think we put together a reasonable amount of information. August is also slim pickings for looking at the news of the Cold Case cast’s on-going careers.
Last time we mentioned her (almost) last so it is only fair that this month we let her go first… with The First. July’s CCCC-up finished talking about a new drama series coming to the streaming service Hulu. It is called The First and stars Sean Penn (Dead Man Walking) and Natascha McElhone (The Truman Show) and Melissa George (Hunted), and Tracie Thoms (Kat Miller in CC). The 8 episode drama about the first manned (and womaned) mission to Mars is due to for launch all at once on the 14th of September (a Friday, in case you’re interested). Previously I posted a link to a teaser trailer that had been out a week. Now we have a proper trailer only a couple of days old. See it HERE on YouTube. Tracie features, very briefly, around 55 seconds in. Expect to see Tracie in two episodes.
On that very same day in September the horror movie The Basement, which also sees Tracie in a small supporting role, gets its limited cinematic release. There is a trailer but I’m not going to link to it (you don’t need to see it) and Tracie is not in it anyway.
As there is just a few days to go now there has been quite a lot of press activity regarding Mayans MC, the FX network drama spin-off from Sons Of Anarchy. The new show which stars Danny Pino (Scotty Valens in CC) starts next Tuesday, the 4th of September. We’ve covered Mayans MC here on KM UK quite a lot already for those looking for a bit more info.
Let’s sneak in a quick mention of one of our less frequent fliers (because she sort of doesn’t fit these posts really): Veena Sud (producer & writer on CC). It was back in April’s CCCC-up that we mentioned Veena was re-uniting with her The Killing star Mireille Enos for a new film called Between Earth And Sky. It has been renamed to The Lie and has featured in a list of projects recognised for being gender balanced. Women in Film, the Sundance Institute, and IMDbPro have formed a group called ReFrame to do just that. Veena wrote and directed The Lie.
England actually had something that could really be called a summer. It was seriously hot for a couple of weeks. It being July, the entertainment industry is relative cool on the news front though, but here is the latest update on the Cold Case cast members that aren’t Kathryn.
John Finn (John Stillman in CC) has been announced has a significant new cast member of the long-running AMC series The Walking Dead. Season 9 starts in October and is due to see some major changes in the acting line-up. John will play Earl, a blacksmith, and Brett Butler (Grace Under Fire) will be his wife Tammy Rose. Minority Report star Samantha Morton also joins the show as the leader of a new faction.
These round-ups are collections of news from the just-ending month. They are not exactly ‘breaking news’ but we appear to have done just that in the June edition. A few hours before posting the previous CCCC-up, Danny Pino (Scotty Valens in CC) announced on social media that he would be starring in the 3rd season of the Netflix comedy One Day At A Time. It was a couple of days before the more traditional news media picked up on the story. Yeah us! Later in the month it was confirmed that Stephanie Beatriz and Melissa Fumero from Brooklyn Nine-Nine will also guest star, alongside singer Gloria Estefan. The show returns in 2019.
Just over a month to go until the new FX series Mayans MC debuts and a trailer has been released. See it HERE on YouTube. Danny stars in the spin-off of Sons Of Anarchy. It will launch on the 4th of September.
We’ve been mentioning the movie The Basement now since 2016. The Mischa Barton starring horror/thriller, which includes Tracie Thoms (Kat Miller in CC), has had a tortuous (pun intended!) history but in April it was given a September release date. We now know it will get a theatrical (as in, in cinemas) outing and be made available on VOD services on the 15th of September.
Back in March Tracie’s episodes in season 3 of UnREAL appeared on the Lifetime channel. By then it was known that there was only to be one more season of the show and that it had already been filmed. It is not expected to be broadcast by Lifetime until next year. However, it was also said that the streaming service Hulu would release the show before then. Much to many peoples’ surprise that happened a couple of weeks ago.
Speaking of Hulu, they have a new original drama series called The First due to start in mid-September. The 8 parter is about the first manned mission to the planet Mars. Channel 4 in the UK are also involved so it is likely to get a release here on that station. The show is by the House Of Cards creator of Beau Willimon. Sean Penn (Mystic River) and Natascha McElhone (Designated Survivor) lead a cast which includes Melissa George (Alias). Tracie is down as being in two episodes. There is a trailer for the The First HERE on YouTube.
We don’t often get to mention Jeremy Ratchford (Nick Vera in CC) in these CCCC-ups. This one is no exception but he did get his own special post at the weekend due to an interview he’d done in which he mentioned Kathryn in a couple of his answers.
