These short months are a pain! I have to get this written in less time. Let’s take a look at the continuing careers of the Cold Case cast for September.
Like the tense thrillers made there, Hollywood can take a long while to build up the tension before an explosive burst of energy with everything happening at once. It’s been over five years since the film Finding Steve McQueen (albeit with a different name then) made some significant steps towards becoming a reality, but in the last couple of months it all kicked off. As I type the film is being made in Atlanta, Georgia. Travis Fimmel (Vikings), Rachael Taylor (Jessica Jones), Forest Whitaker (The Last King Of Scotland), and William Fichtner (Prison Break) lead the cast in a based-on-true-events movie about the attempt to steal $30m from a secret fund held by President Richard Nixon. Cold Case star John Finn (John Stillman in CC) will play W. Mark Felt. Not a name I was familiar with but he is certainly a very famous man. He was the Deputy Director of the FBI in the early 1970s and saw all the compiled information on the Watergate scandal. In 2005 it was revealed that Felt was in fact the informant to the journalists Woodward and Bernstein, who referred to him as ‘Deep Throat’. No release date has been set so far, presumably it will be next year at the earliest. Kate Bosworth (Still Alice) was due to star but as I was compiling this piece it was announced that Rachael would be taking the ‘Molly Morphy’ (not a typo) role instead.
Slipping out a few months earlier than expected and with little fanfare the Eddie Murphy vehicle Mr Church was apparently released a couple of weeks ago. Thom Barry (Will Jeffries in CC) has a small role as ‘Frankie Twiggs’. Eddie is Mr Church, a cook taken on by a dying woman (Natascha McElhone, Californication) to look after her and her daughter (Britt Robertson, Under The Dome). It was only supposed to be for a few months but continued a lot longer than that. A schmaltz-fest no doubt.
This series of posts could be easily be renamed ‘What’s Tracie Been Up To This Month?’ due to the sheer volume of content she provides on a monthly basis. The woman’s a one person entertainment industry. Tracie Thoms (Kat Miller on CC) regularly makes guest star appearances on TV shows; takes roles in films, both long and short; and in amongst all that she finds time for singing engagements. For the past few weeks Tracie has been in New York rehearsing for a production of the musical Falsettos. It is a revival of a show that premièred on Broadway in 1992. The opening night for previews of the new production was just last night (28th September) with the show due to open for general audiences towards the end of October at the Walter Kerr Theatre. The run is planned to end in the new year. Break a leg Tracie.
Which just leaves me to crowbar in another mention of the CBS TV series BrainDead. The show came to an end, probably for good, a couple of weeks ago with a double helping. The ending gave a possible opening for a second season with the character Danny Pino (Scotty Valens in CC) played taking a job on Wall Street. No scope for skewering those in power there… The season 1 (aka the complete series) DVD is expected to be released in early December in the US.
July, July, July… Where did you go? It only seems like 4 weeks ago when we had our June Cold Case Cast Catch-up looking at the work of Kathryn’s fellow cast-mates from the long-running police procedural.
Errr… Things weren’t looking good for a bumper crop this month but as usual Tracie Thoms (Kat Miller on CC) rides in to the rescue, which is why she gets pride of place above again.
After a few months on the festival circuit Equity, the female lead drama about corruption in the world of finance, gets a more general US release this very day (29th July). It may not be a wide release though. Breaking Bad‘s Anna Gunn heads the cast alongside (co-creator) Sarah Megan Thomas and Carrie Preston (True Blood). Tracie has a small role with the name Melanie. Some blokes get a look in too with James Purefoy (Rome) and Nate Corddry (Mom) co-starring.
That could well have been it for the month but a scroll down Tracie’s filmography on IMDb brings up something I’ve never heard of before: Living With Models. It appears to be a sort spoof with elements of Lost and The Hunger Games. Tracie is listed as “Hatch Girl” in three episodes of this, the third season. From a brief glimpse of her in the trailer (here on YouTube) she’s definitely in more more of a Lost-based element. All the episodes of season were released on the 20th of June and are available via the Living With Models website.
John Finn (John Stillman on CC) is one of our more irregular regulars on in the CCCC-up. We last mentioned a new movie he is starring in called Gifted way back in October 2015. At the time we had the plot line and cast members but no date for the release. Now it is pencilled in for April of 2017. Chris Evans (the Captain America one, not the ex-Top Gear presenter one), Jenny Slate (Married) and Octavia Spencer (The Help) lead the cast.
What is also down for 2017 but may not include John is the TV series Doubt. It is almost certainly headed for a 2017 broadcast now and in the past couple of weeks the initial episodes titles have been made known. It is still not clear if John’s “Don” has made it through the (pun slightly intended) trials of getting the show to the screen.
Which leaves us with Danny Pino (Scotty Valens on CC), which I’m sure would be more than OK with many of you. The TV series BrainDead returned after a brief hiatus and did so in a new time slot of 10pm on Sunday, following a repeat of the Tea Leoni vehicle Madam Secretary. It’s politics night on CBS! The show continues with its mix of drama and sci-fi, with political manoeuvring and brain eating parasites taking control of people. The ‘previously on…’ section continues to delight with its funny song especially written for each episode.
Which brings us back to where we started: Tracie Thoms. In piece written exclusively by me exclusively for KM UK I passed on the news I found elsewhere that Tracie would be guest starring in BrainDead. Well I’m doing it again. Just a couple of days ago the press release for episode 9, which has one of the wickedly long titles the show has become known for, “Taking on Water: How Leaks in D.C. are Discovered and Patched” had evidence that it contain traces of Tracie. It is due to air on the 21st of August.
Boom! And there goes May! But just before it ends let us take in some news about Kathryn’s old cast mates in KM UK’s monthly Cold Case Cast Catch-up.
As you can see from the image above we’re leading off with our leading man Danny Pino (Scotty Valens on CC). His new CBS comedy-drama BrainDead starts in just two weeks time. Danny plays US Senator Luke Healy. Mary Elizabeth Winstead (10 Cloverfield Lane) is his sister Laurel. She has returned to Washington after time away as a documentary maker to help her brother run his office. They are the children of a political dynasty. As well as the usual problems of government, which normally revolve around their unwillingness to stop fulfilling their own wishes and actually working for the good of the people that put them there, there is a mysterious bug eating the brains of people on Capitol Hill, turning them into zombies. Tony Shaloub (Monk), Aaron Tveit (Graceland), Johnny Ray Gill (Rectify), and Nikki M James (The Good Wife) co-star. The show was created by the married couple behind The Good Wife, Michelle and Robert King.
Back in August 2015 we covered John Finn (John Stillman in CC) and the on-going saga of the CBS drama series Doubt. Without doubt the doubt continued. A year ago the show was not picked up to series but the project was re-worked and a new pilot shot. In the past few weeks it was announced the show had had a series order placed. They are making it. However, and this is where the doubt creeps back in, it is not in the normal autumn/fall line-up and will be kept for release later in the 2016-17 season. If one of the new shows gets cancelled early then it could be called up to fill in. What is also in doubt is John’s presence. He was involved in the original pilot but we don’t know if his character survived the re-write or whether John was re-cast in the new version.
Jeremy Ratchford (Nick Vera on CC) has found himself cast alongside Oscar winner Octavia Spencer (The Help) and Oscar nominee John Hawkes (who had some memorable scenes with Helen Hunt in The Sessions) in a new thriller called Small Town Crime. Jeremy is listed with the character name ‘Orthopedic’, which is a little odd. There is quite an acting ensemble with Robert Forster (Jackie Brown), Michael Vartan (Hawthorne), Anthony Anderson (Black-ish), amongst others. The story is said to involve Hawkes as an alcholic cop who sets out to find the killer of a young woman whose body he finds. Small Time Crime is by writing/directing partnership Eshom & Ian Nelms (Lost On Purpose) and is currently filming with a likely release in 2017.
It is easy to get a little lost (on purpose or otherwise) when it comes to Tracie Thoms (Kat Miller on CC) and her on-going projects as there are so many of them, and that is not including her one-off singing engagements and the like. An item in the list that stood out as one I had not posted about before, but had already got as far as post-production, is a film called The Drowning. Further investigation shows that it is a re-naming of a film I last mentioned one year ago. Starring Julia Stiles (Blue) and Josh Charles (The Good Wife, not for the first time in this article) it is a thriller that was previously called Border Crossing after the Pat Barker novel it is based on. Tracie’s been upgraded from ‘I dunno’ to Angela. To expand on the previous post it involves the issues surrounding a child killer (a killer who is a child) and what happens when they are released from prison.
As mentioned back in February The Real MVP: The Wanda Durant Story, a Lifetime network TV movie about basketball star Kevin Durant’s mother Wanda, aired for the first time in early May. Appropriately it was the Mother’s Day weekend, in the US anyway. It’s in held in March in the UK. Tracie starred as Demetria, which sounds more like a skin cream to me. Another film to undergo a name change is Raven’s Watch, which will now be called The Watcher for its October festival release. March’s CCCC-up covers the details of Tracie’s role as we know it.
Later dudes.
It’s still February, right? (Déjà vu?) Just when you think you’ve got used to the 28 day long month they go and throw in an extra 24 hours. Typical! It’s like they do it every four years (ish) just to catch us out!
As last month’s CCCC-up (where we look at the on-going careers of the Cold Case cast) was a little late and a lot rushed (no pun intended) I managed to miss out a few things. I’ll try and do a bit better this time. No promises though.
It was all about Tracie Thoms (Kat Miller in CC) last time and it was some of her stuff I forgot so I’ll start with her to redeem myself.
9 Rides (aka Nine Rides) is by writer/director Matthew A. Cherry (Almost Home) and is a feature film about the very much vehicle of the moment (pun very much intended) an Uber driver and his News Year’s Eve. For those of you living under a rock Uber is a effectively a taxi service run by individuals under the control of a smartphone app. If you don’t know a smartphone is… Customers use the app to request a car. Uber drivers can choose which jobs to respond to. Despite the ‘indie’ image Uber is a well funded operation which takes a cut from each fare. They operate in cities all over the world, with a lot of opposition from local taxi services. It is not without controversy to say the least. I digress. Dorian Missick (Southland) is the unnamed ‘Driver’ who receives some very bad news. Tracie is listed in the cast as ‘Fiancee’. The film is due to première at SXSW festival in March (11-19th). There is a Kickstarter page raising money to help with the final post-production elements with more details and a teaser video HERE.
Love. Remember when that was all the rage two weeks ago? Well, just after that Netflix released the Judd Apatow (Knocked Up) / Lesley Arfin (Brooklyn Nine-Nine) / Paul Rust (I Love You, Beth Cooper)-created comedy series Love starring the aforementioned Rust and Gillian Jacobs (Community). Tracie stars as Susan in five of the 10 episodes in the first season. The show has already been signed up for a second run. I hear good things about it so it might be worth checking out if you can.
As is the way of these things a few days after the last CCCC-up news broke of a Lifetime network movie called The Real MVP: The Wanda Pratt Story being put into production. It is about the mother of NBA star Kevin Durant. I don’t know basketball but I gather Kevin is a big deal in the sport. The film is about the struggles of his mother Wanda to raise two sons alone. Apparently Kevin famously dedicated his 2014 winning of the ‘Most Valuable Player’ award to his mother calling her “the real MVP”. Tracie plays a close friend of Cassandra Freeman’s (Single Ladies) Wanda. Queen Latifah (Bringing Down The House) is producing. Filming was already under way when this story appeared at the beginning of February. It is expected to be first aired in time for the American version of Mother’s Day on the 8th of May.
To mark Black History Month (February in the US) the Word Theatre in LA put on a free show called And All That Jazz. Tracie was amongst the many stars at the Hall Of Liberty performing an of ‘inspiring evening of stories, poetry and memoir’ about the jazz greats. As we all know Tracie is very accomplished singer as well as actor.
Again, a few days after the delayed Jan CCCC-up it was announced that the new comedy thriller BrainDead, from the makers of the soon to end The Good Wife, had signed Tony Shalhoub (Monk) as another lead actor. The show, set in political world of Washington DC but with zombies, was first covered in the Dec ’15 CCCC-up when Danny Pino (Scotty Valens in CC) was added to the cast. The show is due to première this coming summer on the CBS network.
It’s been a busy couple of weeks for John Finn (John Stillman in CC). He had guest starring roles in recent episodes of The Good Wife and Elementary (the US TV modern take on Sherlock Holmes). I can’t comment on his roles in either show.
Stretching our remit (as we do occasionally) to stretch the piece we note that regular Cold Case writer and producer Veena Sud (US version of The Killing) has been chosen to write an American remake of the German movie We Monsters. The original film is new, having had a North American première at the influential Toronto Film Festival just last September and centres around recently separated parents forced to get back together to help their teenage daughter cover up a murder.
I know we are on the eve of Halloween but don’t be afraid this is just our CCCC-up (Cold Case Cast Catch-up) round up for October 2015. If there is significant news about the on-going career of the major players in the TV that was lead by Kathryn we bring it to you each month.
Let’s go by police rank in descending order this month.
John Finn (John Stillman on CC) is down to appear in a movie due for release next year. It is called Gifted and is about a man bringing up his young niece after her mother (his sister) dies. The substitute father is in a custody battle over the girl with his mother. It is not clear at this stage how John’s character fits in. Aubrey Highsmith does not share a surname with any of the main characters so perhaps we are looking at a neighbour or someone in the legal team dealing with the custody. Chris Evans (the star of Captain America, not the soon-to-be Top Gear host), Lindsay Duncan (The Honourable Woman), Octavia Spencer (The Help) and Jenny Slate (Married) are among the stars.
The long running process of production and release of the film Death Valley is something we’ve covered several times here on a CCCC-up. It looks like it was finally became available to the public last week. Jeremy Ratchford (Nick Vera in CC) has a small role (I think) as a police office as I showed all the way back in September 2013! Katrina Law (Arrow), Lochlyn Munro (True Justice), Victoria Pratt (Mutant X), Kelly Hu (Arrow) all star in the tale of a group of people, strangers apparently, travelling across the eponymous desert in California when they hit someone with their car. Hilarity ensues, or maybe not.
As usual Ms Tracie Thoms (Kat Miller on CC) has decided to out-do everyone else. She’s filmed something called The California No. Not sure what it is at this time, it could be a TV show or web series, but the name is a reference to a method that Californians have of avoiding awkward questions. Rather than just saying ‘no’ they do nothing. As well that Tracie’s set to star in a movie presumably due out in a year’s time. I presume that because it is called A New York Christmas, is said to be currently in post-production, and has a date of 2016. It’s hardly likely to be a big draw in the summer so we’ll assume next autum/fall at the earliest. The film is a multi-stranded story set in a hotel just because Xmas. Jaime Ray Newman (Eureka), Ross McCall (White Collar), Jamie Bamber (NCIS), and Linda Park (Star Trek: Enterprise) star. Also, Tracie returned to singing for the first time in a while at a charity event for the National Breast Cancer Coalition.
