Director/writer/producer Fabien Martorell has let KM UK know via a Tweet that his short film The Coin has been selected for inclusion in this year’s Big Bear Lake International Film Festival.
Big Bear Lake is high (6750ft / 2060m above sea level) in the hills of southern California, north-east of Los Angeles. The annual festival covers all types of films has been running since 2000 and will on a long weekend late in September (Friday 20th to Sunday 22nd).
The complete list of films due to be screened this year will be officially announced in a couple of weeks but Fabien has given us the news early, as he did for the Palm Springs International Film Fest back in June.
The Coin is a short film starring Kathryn Morris and Christopher Lloyd (Back To The Future). It was filmed last summer and is about a young boy meeting a homeless man at a shop. Kathryn plays the boy’s very stressed mother.
You can read more about the Big Bear Lake International Film Festival at the event’s website. If you are able to attend do let us know how it goes.
Thanks to Fabien for letting us know about this news, we wish him and the rest of the cast and crew all the best with it.
Yesterday Johnny Messner (he of soon-to-be-a-double-father fame) Tweeted about a new film project he is working on.
The movie is called The Protocol, it is a short film, and is the first to be produced by Johnny’s own “Johnny Be Goode” production company 😕
Said to star are Max Ryan (Death Race), Xen Sia (Casino Jack, on the right and below with Kathryn), Joel Cavness, Will Crown and one Kathryn Morris (Cold Case). We really can’t imagine how Johnny managed to get such a talented, successful and high profile TV and film star like Kathryn to take the job
Filming has been going on the past couple of days and could very well be continuing today (14 July 2013).
No word so far on what the film is actually about or Kathryn’s role in it. There is a military theme and from the photos there appears to be an interrogation element to it. That falls well within Kathryn’s realm of experience, though she looks to be on the other side of the desk this time.
Various cast and crew have posted on set photos. Thanks and credit to them. We have collated the ones with Kathryn in them and added them to the KM UK the Gallery.
More news when we get it.
But with another film.
There is less than a month to go until US DVD release of The Sweeter Side Of Life as we’ve covered previously.
If you are willing to wait another month or so and spend less than US$1 more you will be able to get The Sweeter Side Of Life in a “double feature” DVD set with another Hallmark movie called Meddling Mom. It stars Sonia Braga (Alias) and was first broadcast back in February. The basic plot should be obvious from the title and the picture. All very heart warming no doubt.
In a situation that doesn’t quite make sense to me Meddling Mom is a Hallmark Movie Channel movie whereas The Sweeter Side Of Life is a Hallmark Channel movie, note the lack of “Movie”. The Hallmark Channel shows movies, TV series and other programmes. The Hallmark Movie Channel shows movies, TV series and other programmes. Go figure. Anyway, the two disparate parts of the organisation have managed to find some common ground and put their films together on one DVD.
The lack of data space available for films in the single disc format would suggest a the discarding of any extras and a likely drop in picture quality. Released on August 27th you can pre-order your copy now from the American branch of the Amazon store. Details HERE.
A hi-res version of the “3D” box art image has now been added to the Gallery.
Fabien Martorell has sent a Tweet, following a Facebook page post, that his short film The Coin will première at the Palm Springs International ShortFest on Saturday the 22nd of June. It will be at a 1:30pm screening at the Camelot Theatres in Palm Springs.
The short film, which stars Kathryn Morris and Christopher Lloyd (Back To The Future), was filmed last summer and revolves around a young boy meeting a homeless man at a shop. Kathryn plays the boy’s very stressed mother.
The official programme for the event is not due to be released until tomorrow (9th June 2013) but Fabien has clearly been given the information ahead of time.
We wish everyone involved in the production all the best with the event.
You can read more about the ShortFest at the event’s website.
Update (9 June 2013): The official programmes have been released by the ShortFest organisers. The Coin will be screened alongside 8 other short films in a package called FantasyLand. The group is comprised of films from all over the world including France, Taiwan and the United Kingdom. As The Coin shows, these short productions can include some internationally famous actors. An entry in FantasyLand from England, called Dust, stars Alan Rickman (Die Hard) and Jodie Whittaker (Attack The Block). Fellow Brit actors Ian McKellen (X-Men), Brenda Blethyn (Little Voice) and Christopher Eccleston (Dr Who), and singer and The Voice UK coach Tom Jones also have roles in other films across the festival.
Update (10 June 2013): The Palm Springs International ShortFest official press release announcing the 2013 line-up has been published. You can read it here. The world premiere of The Coin and Christopher Lloyd starring in it are mentioned, Kathryn is not name-checked but it’s an incredibly lengthy and impressive list of actors from all over the world so we’ll forgive the oversight on this occasion
The American TV network CBS has today (15th May 2013) released their broadcast schedules for the upcoming 2013-2014 season. New TV show Surgeon General starring Jason Issacs and Kathryn is not on it.
Sad as it may be for all of us hoping to see Kathryn return to the small screen on a regular basis this is not entirely surprising. During the announcements and speculation of the past week Surgeon General was hardly ever mentioned. This is despite Jason being a much sort after star for the latest round of pilots. He is understood to have fielded several offers.
Putting the final nail in the coffin of our hopes Rod Lurie, director of the Surgeon General pilot, has Tweeted:
Ah, SURGEONGENERAL, which I directed for CBS, didn’t get picked up. But network and studio were super supportive and cool. Stuff happens. – LINK
We just wish we could see the pilot. Sadly it is unlikely to ever be broadcast.
We are very sorry to hear this news, even if it was becoming increasingly inevitable, and wish all those that took part and helped make the show all the best.
Update (prior to the Upfront event): Earlier today Nina Tassler, CBS Entertainment President, was quoted as saying “When we get back to LA we’ll probably have other conversations” when asked about additional show pick-ups. So, shows that have so far not had good news could get a reprieve.
