This is KM UK’s 100th item about Fabien Martorell’s short film The Coin aka You Can’t Keep A Good Short Down.
Nearly four years on from our first post about the film (in July 2012) it is returning to the short film festival circuit for an outing in 2016.
The Hang Onto Your Shorts Film Festival is due to have its third running in a month’s time on Sunday the 24th of April.
Based in Asbury Park, New Jersey (south of New York and east of Philadelphia), the festival was started to bring a bit of the creative arts back to the area that was devastated by hurricane Sandy in 2011.
Running from around 10am to a little after 6pm the event is split into 4 or 5 screenings across three venues. Each screening has multiple films in 90-120 minutes. There is some attempt at grouping films into themes but the The Coin being in the ‘Last Set’, due to it being the final group of the day at The Showroom Cinema on Cookman Avenue, gives you some idea of the way things are. There is no repetition of films so even if you did travel to different theatres between screenings you could not see everything.
As you should know by now Kathryn stars in the 9 minute long The Coin as a stressed mother who takes her son to a shop where he meets a kindly homeless man played by Christopher Lloyd.
The Hang Onto Your Shorts Film Festival website has all the details here.
Thanks to Fabien for letting us know about this one.
Many years ago the United States Of America was formed by the joining of 13 British colonies down the East coast of the country.
Now, after the series just finished airing its first season on American TV the sci-fi-ish drama Colony is said to be on the way to Britain.
The Digital Spy website has reported that the Sky 1 satellite channel will broadcast Colony to home in the UK starting in early April of this year. This could mean repeats on the Freeview channel Pick (which was once known as Sky 3) at some point in the future.
Read the Digital Spy article here.
Last September, around the time we found out that Kathryn had joined the cast (by then they’d probably completed filming already), it was announced the streaming service Netflix had acquired the global rights to Colony. It will become available there early next year.
As we know Colony has already been signed up for a second season due to air next year. Kathryn’s continuation or otherwise is not known at this point.

The USA Network has published the official press release for this coming Thursday’s episode of its hit sci-fi-ish drama series Colony. It’s titled ‘Zero Day’ and is episode nine.
Will (Josh Holloway) comes up with a plan to get his family out from under the Occupation. Throwing a wrench in his best-laid plans, Katie (Sarah Wayne Callies) and Broussard (Tory Kittles) attempt to rekindle the fire of resistance by joining forces with a new cell. In a bold political move, Proxy Snyder (Peter Jacobson) fights to protect his office. Later, Maddie (Amanda Righetti) corners her boss in a precarious predicament.
The series also stars Alex Neustaedter and Isabella Crovetti-Cramp.
Guest Stars: Thora Birch, Victor Rasuk, Carl Weathers, Kathleen Rose Perkins, Kathryn Morris, Adrian Pasdar, Ally Walker, Gonzalo Menendez, Charlie Bewley
My emphasis. Presumably Maddie’s boss mentioned above is Charlotte (Kathryn). Thora Birch (American Beauty) is a new addition to the cast.
This is due to be Kathryn’s last appearance of the season, with just one episode left to go. We already know a second season has been commissioned but we don’t know if Charlotte will be a part of it, or even survive that far. It will likely be filmed in the summer, just as this first season was filmed in mid-2015.
Released promo photos and video, and a sneak peak video for episode nine have not included Kathryn at all. However, I have a suspicion that the two images above, which were tagged as being part of episode 7 and posted a few weeks ago here, are actually for this next one. The more relaxed clothing and hair style (harking back to Lilly Rush a bit) are not looks we’ve seen so far. The shot of Maddie glancing back over her shoulder whilst walking away and Charlotte looking uncomfortable fit with the description. We’ll have to wait and see.
Those photos are in the KM UK Gallery filed under episode seven until we know better.
It was released in UK cinemas last Friday and was the recipient of a lot of praise from the critics.
But what of a home release of horror western Bone Tomahawk for those in the United Kingdom?
Well, it’s mixed news.
The division of Amazon based in England now has pages for Bone Tomahawk on both Blu-ray and DVD. These are very recent additions. The prices shown at time of writing are £16 (~US$22) and £11.50 (~US$16) respectively. You can pre-order now.
That’s the good.
The bad is that the released dates for both disc formats are shown as being (again, at time of ‘going to press’) at the very end of December 2016.
I very much doubt that date is correct and I’m going to assume it is a place-holder in lieu of the actual date when it is announced.
If you don’t want to wait that long then you could try acquiring it from one of Britain’s continental neighbours… The disc region codes are the same and they are likely to include an English language track. Just sayin’… Check before purchase though. Caveat emptor an’ all that.
The box art above and flat versions are in the Gallery.
If you want to get a Kathryn Morris fix this weekend whilst sitting in a room of strangers, with your feet on a worryingly sticky floor, and eating way too much hugely expensive popcorn, then your luck’s in.
The western horror movie Bone Tomahawk, starring Kurt Russell (The Hateful Eight), Patrick Wilson (Fargo TV series), Matthew Fox (Lost), Richard Jenkins (Six Feet Under), and Lili Simmons (Banshee) amongst many others, hits the UK cinema screens from today (19th Feb).
Kathryn has a small role in the film as the wife of Kurt Russell’s sheriff who takes a small posse of men to go and rescue his deputy and Samantha (Lili Simmons), wife of Patrick Wilson’s Arthur, from a group of cannibalistic “troglodytes”.
All the reviews I have seen so far in the British press have been very favourable. They warn about the gory bits (it is an 18 certificate) and often mention the slow build up. Some see that as raising the tension, others that it drags early on and is too long. Kurt Russell in particular is picked out for his performance in a fine cast.
BBC Radio 5 Live’s Film Review show (normally involving host Simon Mayo and film critic Mark Kermode but this week they were stood-in for by actor David Morrissey and critic Robbie Collin) made S. Craig Zahler’s directorial film début their film of the week. It was up against Triple 9, How To Be Single, The Finest Hours and Freeheld. So that’s good.
