Happy Birthday Kathryn
from all of us here at KM UK
Yes, it’s our favourite lady’s special day today (28th Jan).
Many thanks to Dianekmfan (the creator of the featured banner above) and desy for contributing birthday-themed banners and wallpapers. You can find them, and many more fan-made images, in the Fan Art section of the KM UK Gallery. New fan art is always welcome. Please contact me if you want to have your work posted on KM UK.
Please feel free to leave your own messages for Kathryn in the comments below.
Update (29th Jan): Johnny Messner posted a photo on Instagram/Twitter of a birthday cake he made for Kathryn. It’s been added to our Gallery.

It’s nice that someone thinks of Kathryn when they are creating a fantasy cast for a work of fan fiction.
Personally I’d “go another way” if I were to write such a thing involving Kathryn though. There’d be less plot, perhaps just involving a plumber or pizza delivery boy, oddly coloured clothes, and more… bow chicka bow wow 😉 And a car chase! A short instead of a feature too
Fan faction author Cleo Calliope has Kathryn down as Jemma Pierson in her latest story, Pack, based on Sherlock Holmes. It seems to be closer to the modern British TV version of Sherlock than many, albeit with an even younger Sherlock. The “real” thing stars, as the Guardian newspaper Twitter feed called him whilst posting the 2015 Oscar nominations, ‘benedict XCuebrvatch’. We thought the days of the ‘Grauniad’ were well and truly behind it thanks to modern technologies like the automatic spell-check in word processors. Clearly not.
We first meet Jemma in chapter three of Pack. She is, to say the least, already dead. Very dead. As Lilly Rush Kathryn’s used to people spilling their guts (as in confessing), not a person spilling hers. Jemma was also a drug-taking prostitute who went by the name Felicity. To quote from Pack:
Her mug shots showed a woman who had been rather pretty once but at 28 was starting to show the ravages of the life she led. Her hair had been badly bleached from her natural brown to a very unnatural blonde and she wore far too much makeup to cover the shadows under her eyes and the lines that had already begun to dig themselves into her face.
That’s Kathryn down to a tee 😕
Other fantasy cast members include Anna Maxwell Martin (Becoming Jane), Tom Wilkinson (The Grand Budapest Hotel), and Brendan Gleeson (In Bruges).
To continue our People’s Choice Awards theme this week, if one post on Tuesday counts a theme, the photo Cleo chose to use to illustrate Jemma in Flickr album (which is how I found it) was from Kathryn’s appearance on the red of the event in January 2004. In fact she used the picture you see above.
You can see that photo, 35 others, and three videos in the KM UK Gallery.
Cleo Calliope’s story Pack is on FanFiction.net and photos of her proposed supporting cast can be seen on Flickr here.
February seems like a long time ago now. It was a long time ago.
Ten months ago I posted an item about an interview done with legendary guitarist Monte Pittman for the Echoes And Dust website. In answer to a follow-up question about his famous students Monte said that he had taught Kathryn to play the guitar. You can read that article, with a link through to the interview, here.
Yesterday (9th December) the France-based Radio Metal website published an interview conducted by ‘Spaceman’ with Monte. It covers a lot of the same ground as the E&D piece, which is not entirely surprising as it was done around the same time. Quite why Radio Metal has waited so long to run it is not clear. It is only at the end of the article that the delay is mentioned, though references to Monte’s new album, The Power Of Three, which came out in January 2014 do give it away a bit.
The reason for posting here on KM UK is, of course, another mention of Kathryn.
Are you giving guitar lessons to other pop stars?
It comes and it goes. I’ve been living and teaching in L.A. for fourteen years now, so there’s been a lot of people. I can’t think of anything that just comes to mind. I’ve seen so many people I’ve forgotten more than I can remember. Some of them became famous after I taught them. There’s one girl, Kathryn Morris, that used to take some guitar lessons from me, and then years later, she was on the TV show Cold Case. Some people just wanna learn to play guitar for fun, or just to have another skill. It’s not that they want to be the best guitar player in the world, for a lot of people I’ve met and a lot of my students, they just wanna be able to play a couple of chords, “Wish You Were Here” or something like that.
Kathryn must have stood out in Monte’s mind for him to mention her in two interviews like this. I’d say it’s meaningful as in the E&D interview he name dropped the likes of Brad Pitt of all people! The less discreet amongst you might point out that in neither answer does Monte comment on Kathryn’s ability 😛
You can read the interview on the Radio Metal website here. Being a French site there is a version in the native language.
In my on-going quest to find out more about the film Bone Tomahawk, which should see Kathryn in a small role as the wife of a wild west Sheriff played by Kurt Russell (Stargate), I’ve been seeking out good sources of intel. As I always do so as to bring you the best and most accurate data.
Looking for information about Bone Tomahawk can bring up a lot of confusing stuff because the film has been in pre-production for over two years, with various casting announcements in the intervening period, and significant changes in the personnel. The news as KM UK reported at the time, because it included Kathryn, was how things were as the film finally went into production in October. The addition of Patrick Wilson (The Conjuring), Matthew Fox (Lost), Lili Simmons (Banshee), David Arquette (Scream), and Kathryn, amongst others, made headlines. Later I created a post rounding up most of what we know.
A couple of weeks ago I found a new podcast by Weird West Radio discussing the recent casting news for Bone Tomahawk. Clearly they are big fans of the western genre. Understandably the guys on the podcast, Johnny and Clint, were excited about the news of a new western and mentioned the inclusion of the actors such as Timothy Olyphant (Justified) and Peter Sarsgaard (Jarhead). Those were earlier casting announcements and they are no longer connected with the film.
Always happy to help out I sent a Tweet to Weird West Radio:
@weirdwestradio Re Bone Tomahawk. IMDb list accurate. Others you mentioned (Olyphant, Sarsgaard, Carpenter) no longer attached to the film. – Link
Today (23 Nov) saw the release of a new WWR podcast and Johnny updated their listeners about Bone Tomahawk and very kindly read out my Tweet. Sort of
I’ve created this post to clarify a couple of things said in the podcast as Twitter is too restrictive. The above covers most of it but I should add the following: I’m a he (understanable confusion from my Twitter details), based in the UK, and an “uber-fan” of the actress Kathryn Morris who has a small role in the film.
Thank you for the mention on WWR. I hope you get to talk to the producers of the film for a future podcast so we can all find out more about the project.
It’s been a weird week
The actress and acting coach Xen Sia attended the recent New York Comic Con event to promote a new comic book called Treadwater, aka TRDWTR.
Although Treadwater exists as a traditional comic book, and there is an animated series and much cross-media material (videos, websites etc.), they are using real-life actors to portray the characters in promotional material. Xen is one of them. There is also talk of Treadwater becoming a live action TV series.
As part of her endorsement work at the NY Comic Con Xen was interviewed by Michael Artsis for the BeTerrific!! (their exclamation marks) website. During the chat she also talked about another new project: The Protocol. Regular readers will know a pilot for this possible TV series was filmed in the summer of 2013, with Kathryn making an appearance whilst she was heavily pregnant with her twin boys. The photo above was taken on the set during filming. Xen makes reference to Kathryn’s character, who we know to be called Grace, also being pregnant. I’m not sure that was quite the coincidence that Xen implies.
Just a few weeks ago I reported on The Protocol‘s increasing presence on IMDb, suggesting there is a move to make the show happen. Whether it will or not is another matter.
The Protocol is set in a not too distant future when the government mandates that all citizens take drugs, the titular ‘Protocol’, to control behaviour. None compliance sees you banished to a dystopian realm.
During her discussion Xen makes much of praising Kathryn for her work so far in the likes of Cold Case as well as her nurturing attitude towards an upcoming actress. Xen says the sort of things that we, as fans and followers of Kathryn, would completely expect her to say about Kathryn. It’s all good.
A video of the interview can be seen on YouTube here. A small copy has been added to the KM UK the Gallery. Talk about The Protocol starts at around the 4 minute mark for those wishing to skip ahead.
