Kathryn Isn’t The 1st Lady?

still_001The no doubt knowledgeable folk (Joe Reid and David Sims in this case) at news website The Wrap have taken the release of the latest Tom Cruise blockbuster movie vehicle, Edge Of Tomorrow, to pronounce on some of his female co-stars.

Joe and David have ranked Tom’s leading ladies in a top 13 based on his films since he last worked with is then wife Nicole Kidman on Eyes Wide Shut in 1999.

Emily Blunt’s character in Edge Of Tomorrow, which is basically War Of The Worlds (the Cruiser’s version) crossed with Groundhog Day, is a lot more forthright than many of the significant female roles in Tom’s other films.  She’s not the comic foil, damsel in distress, or damsel in/out of dat dress.  Clearly this put Emily’s Rita ahead of the pack.  But where do they place Kathryn in this pantheon of actresses?

Kathryn comes in at number 8.  Four slots above Olga Kurylenko in Oblivion.  Cameron Diaz is in the top 10 twice for Knight And Day and Vanila Sky.  Her co-star in that remake, Penelope Cruz (who was reprising her role from the original), is also in there.  Thandie Newton for Mission: Impossible II, Andrea Riseborough also in Oblivion and Michelle Monaghan and in Mission: Impossible 3 fill out the other top spots.

The guys say that Kathryn in “invests a lot of compassion in her performance” in her role as the estranged wife of Tom’s pre-crime cop in Minority Report.  But, they also say that Cold Case “ran for approximately ten thousand years on CBS” so facts may not be a feature of their pieces :-)

Of course few of the other women listed can not claim to have been Tom Cruise’s wife, Brad Pitt’s wife (Moneyball), Ben Affleck’s paramour (Paycheck), and Josh Hartnett’s ex (Resurrecting The Champ).  That is many of Hollywood finest right there.  Not to mention that Kathryn was one of the few foes that bested Xena: Warrior Princess and nearly stole her gal.  And, none of these ladies did seven years on a highly rated TV drama series either!  Not a bad strike rate.

You can read the article on The Wrap.  What are your thoughts?

And that’s a wrap!

Monte Mentioned Mentoring Morris

epiphone_001The photo on the right was taken on the set of Cold Case at some point during the production of the show’s 4th season.  To celebrate reaching the milestone the cast apparently gave 200 custom-made Epiphone guitars to the crew.  Exactly when this happened is not clear but it was published on the Epiphone website in February of 2007.  That photo and a close-up of the guitar are in the Gallery.  The image popped up in a search for references to Kathryn and guitars, based on a vague memory of Kathryn being pictured with one.

This was a nice chance to look back at an event not previously dealt with on KM UK, and post the photo, but it is actually a digression from the real point of this post.  I get distracted by the pretty pictures :-)

Echoes And Dust, a London-based music news and review site which specialises in a “particular dark corner of Indiedom”, has today (7th Feb 2014) published an interview by Andrew Rawlinson with guitarist Monte Pittman.  I have to plead ignorance of such things but in the guitar world Monte is a bit of big deal.  He’s probably best known for writing, performing and touring with Madonna after meeting her through her (then) husband Guy Ritchie (not to be confused with yours truly :-) ).  They met when Monte taught Guy to play guitar.

In the interview Andrew asks Monte about his famous third student and if he’s ever taught anyone else famous:

Monte Pittman: His assistant, Nathan, got my number and let up lessons for “his boss”. When I left for the first Madonna tour I did, I had 55 students in circulation. I taught Kathryn Morris who later went on to star in the show “Cold Case”. I taught Catherine Keener and Dermot Mulroney. I taught Brad Pitt. Those are a few that immediately come to mind because they were so cool to me. I gave Dido a guitar lesson once.

Insert your own joke about a second one being key :-)

The phrase “later went on to star in… CC” tells us something about the timing but not much.  Could it have been for her short (and cut shorter) role in the Spielberg movie AI?

Monte recently released a new solo album called The Power Of Three.

Cold Case – Book Him… Danno?

bruckheimer_page_00_coverSpeaking of Hawaii Five-O…  No, actually that (including in its 2010 revived form) is one of the few recent cop-shows that Jerry Bruckheimer has not had anything to do with.

In late October of last year we saw one of the few public appearances in 2013 by Kathryn.  The event was the launch of Jerry Bruckheimer: When Lightning Strikes – Four Decades Of Filmmaking, a book chronicling the life of film and TV producer extraordinaire Jerry Bruckheimer.  Jerry and his company JBTV are behind such TV shows as the CSI triumvirate and, of course, Cold Case.  The book was on sale from mid-December.

In that previous post I used the word ‘tome’ just as another word for book.  However, the more correct usage in referring to large, heavy books was more accurate than I could have thought.  The phrase ‘weighty tome’ would be more appropriate.  It’s not so much a coffee table book, more of a coffee table.  Stick four legs on it and you’ve got a significant piece of furniture.  At 41.5 x 28.2 x 3cm (16.3 x 11.1 x 1.2″) it’s a whole lot of book.  Roughly A3-sized for those outside the US.  And it weighs a fair bit too so you get a lot of book for your money.

I won’t bore you with too much detail but When Lightning Strikes covers Jerry’s whole life as well as his career in film and TV through words as well as hundreds of photos from behind the scenes as well as stills from dozens of projects.  Fans of the Pirates Of The Caribbean films (how many of been released?  four? with at least two more on the way! that’s films not fans 😉 ) will be particularly interested in a foreword by Johnny Depp and whole section dedicated to the monster franchise.

So what about Cold Case and our Kathryn?

Ghost Of Xmas Past

on_set_001_ridge_perkettThe lucky young gentleman you see here (larger version in the Gallery) getting a hug from Kathryn is Ridge Perkett.  You may recognise him from the episode of Cold Case called Ghost Of My Child, the finale (episode 18) of season 5.  That was the season that had fewer episodes than the normal 22-24 due to a writers strike that hit much of Hollywood during the 2007-2008 production runs.

Spoiler Alert:  In a memorable scene at the very end of Ghost Of My Child, Lilly and Scotty take Max (Ridge) back to his biological parents, letting him out of her car and pointing across to them.

Ridge featured many episodes of the very long running soap opera The Bold And The Beautiful as Ridge “RJ” Forrester Jr., the son of Brooke Logan Forrester (played by Katherine Kelly Lang).  There can’t be many Ridges in the world and but this boy becomes an actor and managed to land a role with the same name.  As is often the case with child actors there have been several RJs over the years.  Perkett had the job from 2006 to 2009.

The website Star Kidz is all about kidz kids that… star in daytime and primetime television shows.  The last few days they’ve run a series of short interviews with some of their subjects, including Ridge, as a countdown to Xmas 2013.  On Friday it was Ridge’s turn and in the piece (“5 Days Til’ Christmas!“*) he was asked:

8. What was it like working with Kathryn Morris on Cold Case?

Kathryn Morris was super nice, she showed me around the set before we started filming and helped me not be afraid and nervous.

Awww.

Happy Xmas Ridge.

* There are no direct links to the article so I’ve used an archive link to reduce it to ones about the character of RJ.  You need to scroll down to find the piece.  Search the page for ‘ridge’ .

The Coin Gets Real

poster_001The review by LA Firm Inc Magazine of the short film The Coin, brought to you by KM UK last week, seemed to start something off.  Not only was the film’s director/writer/producer, Fabien Martorell (and actor/producer Will Kemp), kind enough to favourite and reTweet our Tweeted announcement of the post, but he also followed up with Tweets of quotes about the film.

One those that Fabien linked to was on the Brazilian film review website Revista Moviola (Movie Magazine ?).  Brazil-born but England-resident Maysa Monção, who has worked in various sections of the entertainment industry in London in recent years, wrote the piece you can find on the Revista Moviola website HERE.

Below is a copy of the original text and an English translation by Google’s Translate feature, with a few tweaks by yours truly.  Apologies for the poor English.  If any Português speakers would like to offer improvements please let me know and I’ll edit accordingly.
