Something French For The Weekend?

poster_001In mid-May the world famous Cannes Film Festival takes place.  This year the 11 days of madness ends on the same day as the the equally famous Formula 1 race at Monaco.  Lots of film stars will be adding to the clamour/glamour on the grid that Sunday.  Not sure if that is by accident or design.  With Bernie Ecclestone in charge you should take nothing for granted.  With his money he makes things happen his way.

fenetre_sur_courts_poster_001Speaking of money, cars, the south of France and film festivals…  (Now that’s a segue!)

As reported previously Fabien Martorell’s short film The Coin has been selected for screening at the Avignon International Short Film Festival, or as it is known more locally the “Fenêtre Sur Courts” Festival International du Film de Court Métrage d’Avignon.

Avignon is inland, 50 miles (85km) north-west of the coastal city of Merseille.  It’s around 100 miles (160km) west of Cannes, which is itself 20 miles (32km) west of Monaco.

The festival starts today (Friday, 4th April) but The Coin will be shown tomorrow at 2pm in a bill of seven films under the title of ‘Competition 4’.  Could there be a prize in the offing?

For writer/director/producer Fabien it is something of a homecoming (though I don’t think he will be present) as he is French by birth, but lives in LA these days.

If you happen to find yourself in the south of France this Saturday, pop along to the festival and let us know what it was like.

You can read more details on the festival at the Fenêtre Sur Courts website (in French).

The Coin Gets Newport Slot

newport_beach_film_festival_756x123Two years ago the Newport Beach Film Festival saw the première of the short film Sunday’s Mother.

In the upcoming 2014 edition of the California-based event the short film The Coin is being screened, though it is far from its first showing.  Another one due this very weekend in France, more on that later.

newport_beach_film_festival_141x168Fabien Martorell’s film about the young son (Jack Ryan Shepherd) of a very stressed mother (Kathryn) meeting a homeless man (Christopher Lloyd) at a grocery store, will be shown with 6 other shorts in a programme called ‘Short Connections’.  The one and a half hour screening is happening at The Triangle, Harbor Boulevard, Costa Mesa, on the Saturday the 26th April starting at 3:45pm.

The other films on the bill include projects from England, Finland and Germany as well as America.  Floating Sunflowers starring Anna Chlumsky (Veep) will be getting one of its first airings as part of this collection of short films.  Animation The Hungry Corpse voiced by Stephen Mangan (Episodes) and Bill Nighy (Love Actually) is representing for those of us that still put a “u” in colour :-)

The NBFF is celebrating its 15th year and is running a promotional campaign called “15 Years Under the Influence” to highlight the event.  As you can see from the colourful banner image above the festival starts on April 24th (a Thursday) and runs for 8 days.  More details on the Newport Beach Film Festival can be found on the official website HERE.

C.U. At C.I.F.F.?

poster_001A quick reminder of the upcoming screenings of The Coin at the Cleveland International Film Festival, as reported last month.

Starting tomorrow (Thursday, 20th March) the short film by director/writer/producer Fabien Martorell will be shown four times in the early days of the event.  Each time it will be shown alongside other short films.  2:15pm on Thursday and 5:10pm on Friday sees the ‘Shorts Program 4’ screenings.  Saturday and Sunday, 14:30 and 09:20 repectively, it switches to the ‘Hollywood Shorts Program’.

cleveland_international_film_festival_logo_260x93An interesting sounding short called Dog Food starring Amanda Seyfried (Mama Mia!) is one the seven films in the ‘The Hollywood Shorts Program’.  Putting the two descriptions “a butcher loses his dog” and “a self-employed butcher gets an interesting dinner invitation” together with the title and, well, you can draw your own conclusions…

In Cleveland this week and weekend?  Going to CIFF?  Let us know if get to see The Coin.  Details of the CIFF can be found on the official website.

Minority Report – Sunday on BBC1

still_001I don’t need to be a future seeing ‘Pre-Cog’ named Agatha to see something lovely in the future for UK TV viewers this coming weekend.  Or do I….?  No, I just need to be a TV guide reading Pre-Bed person in England  :-)

This coming Sunday night (16th March) BBC One gives us it’s annual airing of the Tom Cruise-led sci-fi action movie Minority Report.  Last shown by ‘Auntie’ in May 2013, it starts a little late for those of us with jobs to go to in the morning and even later if you live north of the border in Scotland.  Is this why you want independence, so you can schedule Kathryn Morris movies when you want?  :-)

Statuesque (because he’s at least as big as some statues such as the Oscars) Tom is John Anderton, a cop in a future with a set of three people (the ‘Pre-Cogs’) blessed with an ability to see visions of crimes yet to happen.  It’s the job of John and co. to stop those crimes before they happen.  They obviously altered the laws in this crime-free utopia to make incarcerating innocent people (they’ve been stopped from committing the crime after all) OK with everyone.  They couldn’t possibly allow such things to happen in the present…

Kathryn stars as Lara, the estranged wife of John.  That’s her above with the short brown hair.  The reason for their separation, the loss of their young son to a child snatcher, is what drove John to take this job.  John needs help after being framed for murder by the very system he’s working for.  He turns to his ex.

First released in 2002, Minority Report pre-dates Kathryn’s work on Paycheck and Cold Case by a year.  Co-starring Max von Sydow (The Exorcist), Samantha Morton (In America) and Colin Farrell (In Bruges), it became a hugely successful film around the world with box-office takings of over $300m.  KM UK has a comprehensive set of HD screencaps and promo image above in the Gallery already.

Sunday, BBC One at 23:25 in England and Wales.  Delayed by local sports coverage the Scots will have to wait another 55 minutes.  Full details on the BBC website here.

Sometime For The Centime, Franc-ly

poster_001Back in the latter part of January we brought you news of the short film The Coin‘s first foray abroad.

The petit movie had been chosen as an official selection at the “Fenêtre Sur Courts” Festival International du Film de Court Métrage d’Avignon.  That’s the Avignon International Short Film Festival.  Avignon in France.

fenetre_sur_courts_poster_001The festival organisers have recently released an initial (subject to change) schedule of proceedings so we can make an early attempt to narrow down which of the three days The Coin will be screened on.

The festival runs from April 4th to the 6th, with events running from 9am on the Friday to 7:30pm on the Sunday.  Our little-movie-that-could starring Christopher Lloyd (Piranha 3DD), Kathryn and young Jack Ryan Shepherd, gets it airing in the prime-time slot on the Saturday afternoon.

As part of ‘Competition 4’ starting at 2pm The Coin will be screened with six other short films.  They are mostly French films, with one Spanish entry.  Because our friend the writer/director/producer Fabien Martorell is French his film is listed as being ‘French/USA’  :-)

Fingers crossed for another award.

You can read more details on the festival at the Fenêtre Sur Courts website (it’s in French of course).

Apologies to all (especially the French amongst you) for any attempted puns  :-)
