Exclusive! Kathryn In W.E.I.R.D. World TV Movie

weird_world_223
W.E.I.R.D. World is a weird kind of world. I guess that should be obvious from the title, but it is.

But why W.E.I.R.D. and not just ‘weird’?  To misquote from the pilot episode of the hit TV show Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D.:

Hill:  What does W.E.I.R.D. stand for Agent Ward?
Ward:  Wilson Emery Institute for Research and Development.
Hill:  And what does that mean to you?
Ward:  That someone really wanted our initials to spell weird.

Made in 1995, W.E.I.R.D. World the TV movie was almost certainly a pilot for a planned TV series.  For what ever reason the TV series was not picked up.  The basic set up screams for ‘thing of the week’, much like The X-Files but contained within a particular place.  A sort of early version of another Sci-fi channel TV series Eureka (aka A Town Called Eureka) crossed with 1950s B-movies. The Sci-fi channel wanted to tap into the X-Files success with this.

weird_world_006The film is certainly going for it in terms of the cast and those behinds the scenes. You’ve got Ed O’Neill (Modern Family), Dana Ashbrook (Twin Peaks), and Paula Marshall (Spin City), amongst others in front of the camera.  Director William Malone had done episodes of the Freddy’s Nightmares and Dark Justice TV shows.  The executive producers included Hollywood big hitters like Richard Donner (Lethal Weapon), Walter Hill (The Warriors), Joel Silver (Die Hard), and Robert Zemeckis (Back To The Future). With that kind of serious movie making power behind it how could it fail…?

There was a time when Ed O’Neill was famous as Al Bundy, the deadbeat husband and father in the long running and massively successful sitcom Married With Children.  Al’s wife was the larger than life Peggy (Katey Sagal, Sons Of Anarchy), known for her figure hugging outfits and her… appetite for and willingness to be disappointed by… little Al.  They also had a smart son (and a dumb, but hot daughter).

weird_world_031Luckily Ed has managed to escape all that with an almost unheard of new sitcom called Modern Family.  In this new role Ed is Jay, a successful in business older husband to the larger than life younger wife Gloria (Sofia Vergara), known for her figure hugging outfits… you get the picture.  They also have a smart son.  Where do these TV creatives get their ideas?

In W.E.I.R.D. World Ed is Dr. Monochian, the bald and goatee bearded head of the institute, a secret government funded research facility investigating all kinds of crazy science stuff.  They push the boundries of genetics, viruses, robotics, artificial intelligence etc. Kathryn is Dr M’s assistant, Lucy.

weird_world_058The plot is too convoluted and daft to even try and sum up in a post like this.  We’ve got a scientist killed by a colleague, a big mechanical security robot (nothing can go wrong there then!), age regression (middle-aged man into young boy), sexual intrigue, a chief security officer on the take, time travel and even Albert Einstein.  It’s all packed into the 90 minute running time.  20 years later it looks its age with poor special effects and dated technology.  It probably didn’t look too great in 1995 either.

Kathryn’s role is relatively small but she appears in various scenes throughout.  Initially Lucy seems sweet but there is a steeliness there.  She knows more about the science than would be necessary for someone that just answers the phone, and is quite the manipulator.   She has goals beyond keeping the boss’s schedule and will get what she wants.  As Dr M’s second pair of eyes-and-ears she needs to know what is going on and can use her free rein and wiles to stay on top of it all.

weird_world_157By the end of the film everything is set up for the TV series that never happened.  The main characters were assembled and their complex relationships defined.  All it needed was a new

Somehow, after much searching I managed to hunt down a copy of this film.  It is small and very low quality but I have put together a collection of screenshots of Kathryn as Lucy.  These are now exclusively available in the KM UK Gallery.

Come back next week for some exclusive videos of Kathryn’s performance in W.E.I.R.D. World.

The Coin @ Enfoque On Friday

gold_coast_international_film_festival_851x315Having decrypted the cunning Only Connect picture round-style puzzle (hi Vicky!) I determined when The Coin will be shown at the Enfoque International Film Festival for a previous post.

screenshot_001The answer was that the short film by Fabien Martorell would be shown at the Puerto Rico celebration of films from around the world on Friday the 14th.

That would be this coming Friday, making this a reminder with just a few days to go for any of you that might be in a position to… err… go.

Those wishing to see Christopher Lloyd (Roger Rabbit) and Kathryn in the 9 minute long drama need to go to the Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico in… err… Puerto Rico at 7:30pm.

More details can be found at the festival’s website here.

Bone Tomahawk Update

misc_001It has been a few weeks since the news first broke on Kathryn starring in the horror western Bone Tomahawk so I thought I’d post a an update on where things stand now.

We know from the news items that Kathryn will play the wife of Sheriff Franklin Hunt, the lead role taken by Kurt Russell (Stargate).  A few days later it became apparent that Mrs Hunt actually has a first name and it is Lorna.  Kathryn joined a significant cast including the likes of Patrick Wilson (Stretch), Matthew Fox (Party Of Five), Lili Simmons (Banshee), Sean Young (Ace Ventura: Pet Detective), David Arquette (Eight Legged Freaks), Richard Jenkins (Say It Isn’t So), Sid Haig (Jackie Brown), Michael Paré (The Lincoln Lawyer), and Fred Malamed (you may not have seen him but you’ve definitely heard him).

The plot of the S. Craig Zahler written and directed film revolves around the Sheriff and a small band of others taking on a dangerous rescue mission in 1800s America.  A group of townsfolk are being held captive by cannibalistic troglodytes.  A local rancher’s wife is amongst them.

A draft script of the film I’ve seen suggests that Kathryn’s role is relatively small (not a big surprise) and is principally made up of two scenes.  Of course things can change.  This film had a lengthy and complicated life before filming got under way in late September of this year.  Back in September 2012 significant steps were taken towards getting the project in to production, including casting lead roles.

In the first of the two scripted scenes Lorna welcomes her husband home, she appears to have been ill.  Later, at home again, she is concerned about Franklin leaving on the adventure core to the plot.

Principal photography ended just over a week ago now so Kathryn has filmed her scenes already.  Most likely this happened at the end of September/beginning of October, not long after her casting became known about.

Just this last Monday (3rd Nov 2014) Entertainment Weekly unveiled a photo of Kurt Russell on horseback in full western regalia, full beard and all.

And to bring us completely up to date: Bone Tomahawk will be making an appearance of sorts at the the American Film Market which opens today (5th Nov 2014) and runs for eight days.  We covered the AFM two years ago when Kathryn’s Hallmark TV movie The Sweeter Side Of Life was screened for the first time at the business-only event.  Buyers representing film distributors and TV networks from around the world congregate in Santa Monica, California, to watch movies and decide what they will purchase for their home territories.  Still in the early stages of post-production Bone Tomahawk will not be screened at the AFM but will be showcased in some form.

The current thinking is Bone Tomahawk is being targeted for an autumn 2015 release.

KM UK will continue to monitor Bone Tomahawk‘s progress and will bring you any updates.

The Coin @ GCIFF On Wednesday

gold_coast_international_film_festival_851x315The previous update on The Coin‘s appearance at the Gold Coast International Film Festival was a little vague on details.  But only because the GCIFF was.

screenshot_001In the past week the organisers have made more information available about the individual screenings.  I’d like to think it was due to KM UK’s prompting.  It probably wasn’t, but I’ll be taking credit any way :-)

So, as the headline above says The Coin will be shown on Wednesday (5th Nov) as part of the ‘Great Shorts 1’ programme at the Port Washington Public Library.

‘Great Shorts 1’ was our favoured choice because it is free (though tickets need to be reserved to guarantee a seat) and includes refreshments.  Tea and biscuits all round then.  Kathryn and biscuits?  Does it get any better than that?

The show starts at 12 noon and the 10 film presentation lasts approximately 90 minutes.

See the GCIFF website here for full details of this and other events.

Xen Talks The Protocol At NY Comic Con

on_set_012The actress and acting coach Xen Sia attended the recent New York Comic Con event to promote a new comic book called Treadwater, aka TRDWTR.

Although Treadwater exists as a traditional comic book, and there is an animated series and much cross-media material (videos, websites etc.), they are using real-life actors to portray the characters in promotional material.  Xen is one of them.  There is also talk of Treadwater becoming a live action TV series.

As part of her endorsement work at the NY Comic Con Xen was interviewed by Michael Artsis for the BeTerrific!! (their exclamation marks) website.  During the chat she also talked about another new project: The Protocol.  Regular readers will know a pilot for this possible TV series was filmed in the summer of 2013, with Kathryn making an appearance whilst she was heavily pregnant with her twin boys.  The photo above was taken on the set during filming.  Xen makes reference to Kathryn’s character, who we know to be called Grace, also being pregnant.  I’m not sure that was quite the coincidence that Xen implies.

Just a few weeks ago I reported on The Protocol‘s increasing presence on IMDb, suggesting there is a move to make the show happen.  Whether it will or not is another matter.

Xen Sia at NY Comic ConThe Protocol is set in a not too distant future when the government mandates that all citizens take drugs, the titular ‘Protocol’, to control behaviour.  None compliance sees you banished to a dystopian realm.

During her discussion Xen makes much of praising Kathryn for her work so far in the likes of Cold Case as well as her nurturing attitude towards an upcoming actress.  Xen says the sort of things that we, as fans and followers of Kathryn, would completely expect her to say about Kathryn.  It’s all good.

A video of the interview can be seen on YouTube here.  A small copy has been added to the KM UK the Gallery.  Talk about The Protocol starts at around the 4 minute mark for those wishing to skip ahead.
