Well… it actually began quite a few years ago now, as covered previously in far too much detail here. Things are, however, progressing with the pre-release process starting very soon.
Once past all the ups-and-downs of pre-production the movie Bone Tomahawk was filmed in September and October last year. Since then it has been in post-production: the process of editing, re-recording audio, adding special effects etc.
We’re interested in all this on KM UK because Kathryn has a small role in the horror western film as the wife of the main character Sheriff Franklin Hunt, as played by Kurt Russell (Fast & Furious 7).
In a couple of weeks (13th-24th May) the famous ‘Cannes Film Festival’ starts in the southern France. The glitzy star-studded premières and the critics’ reactions to the latest releases get all the headlines but a big part of the 10-day long event is the business deals done. Films are sold on the international markets by distributors in ‘Le Marché du Film’.
One of the distributors of Bone Tomahawk is French company ‘Celluloid Dreams’. They will be attending Cannes and will be promoting 9 projects, some ready to go like local fare Dheepan and others still in early development such as The Swallows of Kabul. Bone Tomahawk is in between those states as it is still in post-production but it is set to be showcased in some form or other.
It is unlikely that much will be made public about Bone Tomahawk‘s appearance at Cannes but more details, such as possible release dates, and who knows, maybe even a trailer could make a showing.
Either way it is a sign that the process is moving along.
The year has hardly started and the predictions are coming in for big movies in 2015.
Quint (Eric Vespe) on the long-running Ain’t It Cool News website has written up a list of films he is looking forward to in the coming year.
The list is comprehensive to say the least, there are the best part of 100 films on it, but Bone Tomahawk is right up there in the first 10. When you’ve piqued the interest just after the likes of the new Star Wars, Mad Max, Jurassic World and Bond films, you are in good company.
The new Quentin Tarantino movie The Hateful Eight, also a Western and starring Kurt Russell, may have brought it to Quint’s mind earlier than it might otherwise have but still…
Kurt’s on a run at the moment as he’ll first be seen in the new Fast & Furious 7 movie. The car-based action franchise has got a certain Western vibe to it. More steel carts than steel horses though.
There is still no word on a release date for Bone Tomahawk but something is bound to break soon.

Bone Tomahawk, written and directed by S. Craig Zahler, is a horror Western film starring Kurt (The Thing), Patrick Wilson (Let’s Kill Ward’s Wife), Matthew Fox (Lost), Lili Simmons (Banshee) and Sean Young (Blade Runner). Kurt is the sheriff who sets out to rescue a group taken hostage by ‘cannibalistic troglodytes’. Kathryn plays Mrs sheriff, Lorna Hunt.
In my on-going quest to find out more about the film Bone Tomahawk, which should see Kathryn in a small role as the wife of a wild west Sheriff played by Kurt Russell (Stargate), I’ve been seeking out good sources of intel. As I always do so as to bring you the best and most accurate data.
Looking for information about Bone Tomahawk can bring up a lot of confusing stuff because the film has been in pre-production for over two years, with various casting announcements in the intervening period, and significant changes in the personnel. The news as KM UK reported at the time, because it included Kathryn, was how things were as the film finally went into production in October. The addition of Patrick Wilson (The Conjuring), Matthew Fox (Lost), Lili Simmons (Banshee), David Arquette (Scream), and Kathryn, amongst others, made headlines. Later I created a post rounding up most of what we know.
A couple of weeks ago I found a new podcast by Weird West Radio discussing the recent casting news for Bone Tomahawk. Clearly they are big fans of the western genre. Understandably the guys on the podcast, Johnny and Clint, were excited about the news of a new western and mentioned the inclusion of the actors such as Timothy Olyphant (Justified) and Peter Sarsgaard (Jarhead). Those were earlier casting announcements and they are no longer connected with the film.
Always happy to help out I sent a Tweet to Weird West Radio:
@weirdwestradio Re Bone Tomahawk. IMDb list accurate. Others you mentioned (Olyphant, Sarsgaard, Carpenter) no longer attached to the film. – Link
Today (23 Nov) saw the release of a new WWR podcast and Johnny updated their listeners about Bone Tomahawk and very kindly read out my Tweet. Sort of
I’ve created this post to clarify a couple of things said in the podcast as Twitter is too restrictive. The above covers most of it but I should add the following: I’m a he (understanable confusion from my Twitter details), based in the UK, and an “uber-fan” of the actress Kathryn Morris who has a small role in the film.
Thank you for the mention on WWR. I hope you get to talk to the producers of the film for a future podcast so we can all find out more about the project.
It’s been a weird week
It has been a few weeks since the news first broke on Kathryn starring in the horror western Bone Tomahawk so I thought I’d post a an update on where things stand now.
We know from the news items that Kathryn will play the wife of Sheriff Franklin Hunt, the lead role taken by Kurt Russell (Stargate). A few days later it became apparent that Mrs Hunt actually has a first name and it is Lorna. Kathryn joined a significant cast including the likes of Patrick Wilson (Stretch), Matthew Fox (Party Of Five), Lili Simmons (Banshee), Sean Young (Ace Ventura: Pet Detective), David Arquette (Eight Legged Freaks), Richard Jenkins (Say It Isn’t So), Sid Haig (Jackie Brown), Michael Paré (The Lincoln Lawyer), and Fred Malamed (you may not have seen him but you’ve definitely heard him).
The plot of the S. Craig Zahler written and directed film revolves around the Sheriff and a small band of others taking on a dangerous rescue mission in 1800s America. A group of townsfolk are being held captive by cannibalistic troglodytes. A local rancher’s wife is amongst them.
A draft script of the film I’ve seen suggests that Kathryn’s role is relatively small (not a big surprise) and is principally made up of two scenes. Of course things can change. This film had a lengthy and complicated life before filming got under way in late September of this year. Back in September 2012 significant steps were taken towards getting the project in to production, including casting lead roles.
In the first of the two scripted scenes Lorna welcomes her husband home, she appears to have been ill. Later, at home again, she is concerned about Franklin leaving on the adventure core to the plot.
Principal photography ended just over a week ago now so Kathryn has filmed her scenes already. Most likely this happened at the end of September/beginning of October, not long after her casting became known about.
Just this last Monday (3rd Nov 2014) Entertainment Weekly unveiled a photo of Kurt Russell on horseback in full western regalia, full beard and all.
And to bring us completely up to date: Bone Tomahawk will be making an appearance of sorts at the the American Film Market which opens today (5th Nov 2014) and runs for eight days. We covered the AFM two years ago when Kathryn’s Hallmark TV movie The Sweeter Side Of Life was screened for the first time at the business-only event. Buyers representing film distributors and TV networks from around the world congregate in Santa Monica, California, to watch movies and decide what they will purchase for their home territories. Still in the early stages of post-production Bone Tomahawk will not be screened at the AFM but will be showcased in some form.
The current thinking is Bone Tomahawk is being targeted for an autumn 2015 release.
KM UK will continue to monitor Bone Tomahawk‘s progress and will bring you any updates.
It is being reported that Kathryn has been added to the cast of a film called Bone Tomahawk.
She joins Kurt Russell (Stargate), Matthew Fox (Lost), Patrick Wilson (A Gifted Man), Richard Jenkins (Six Feet Under), and the also just joined Lili Simmons (Banshee) and David Arquette (Scream).
Kathryn is to play the wife of Kurt Russell’s Sheriff Hunt.
The briefest of synopsis of this mid-1800s set Western is “Four men set out in the Wild West to rescue a group of captives from cannibalistic cave dwellers.”
Filming is believed to have started yesterday (29th Sept) and will continue into October, with southern California standing in for the area that is now the Texas/Mexico border. The film has been written by and is to be directed by novelist S. Craig Zahler.

We’ll bring you more when we can.
