Not content with closing the Fantastic Fest Film Festival with its world première, Bone Tomahawk will closing the Popcorn Frights Film Festival just 3 days later. It won’t be the film’s première, but it is the first running of the horror film festival. 11pm, aka ‘the witching hour’, on October 4th at the O Cinema Wynwood, Miami is when the horror western starring Kurt Russell is being screened. Last Thursday there was the news of the film receiving its première showing at the Fantastic Film Festival in October. Yesterday it was announced that RLJ Entertainment, formerly known as Image Entertainment, had made its first acquisition deal to distribute Bone Tomahawk in the North American markets of the United States and Canada. Two things have still not been said so far about the agreement: the format (cinema or DVD/VOD) and the release date. We’re also awaiting news on distribution in other territories. More when we get it.
The genre-crossing film festival Fantastic Fest has announced that Bone Tomahawk will receive its world première at the event later this year. S. Craig Zahler’s horror western will be the closing night film, presumably meaning it will be screened on the 1st of October 2015, the last date given. Fantastic Fest takes place at the Alamo Drafthouse in Austin, Texas and kicks-off on the 24th September. Bone Tomahawk stars Kurt Russell (Overboard) as a Sheriff who sets out with three other men to rescue a group of captured townsfolk from ‘cannibalistic cave dwellers’. Kurt and his co-star Matthew Fox (Lost) are both understood to be attending the première screening. We can only hope that Kathryn, who plays the Sheriff’s wife in the film, stands by her man (Kurt or Johnny, we don’t mind as long as she’s there) at the event. May saw the release of the poster. A month ago the writer/director S. Craig Zahler responded to a comment on IMDb to say the film was finished having gone through seven months of post production. He added that we should “[l]ook for announcements in the near future regarding the release and premiere.”

Overnight (UK time) the first poster for the film Bone Tomahawk was released by the production company Caliber Media. You may have noticed it already. I slipped in a small copy above (full size in the Gallery). Try squinting We know that Kathryn’s role in Bone Tomahawk as the wife of the Sheriff played by Kurt Russell will be quite small. So it is not a big surprise that Kathryn does not feature in the stars pictured or named in large letters in the poster. However, you never know how things can change once a film goes into post-production. Kathryn’s filmed scenes could easily have been lost in the editing process. The very good news is that if you look closely at the lower section of the poster you can see this:
As mentioned previous Bone Tomahawk is due to be showcased in some form, probably only to those in the trade, at the Cannes Film Festival starting next week. Hopefully they’ll be more news then. An actual release date has not been announced yet and I understand that the film is in the final stages of audio post-production. |
