Ideally this post would be another of KM UK’s “Media Alerts” where I post about upcoming broadcasts of Kathryn’s work on British TV, like last week’s posting about A.I. Artificial Intelligence being on over the weekend.
The Rod Lurie (yes, him again) directed film The Last Castle gets its first airing in 18 months on the BBC here in little ol’ England (and Wales and Scotland) this coming Friday (13th Dec 2013) at the ungodly hour of 23:50. Details of the BBC broadcast can be found on their website. As KM UK has not covered The Last Castle in its four and a half year history this is a good excuse to finally do so.
The Last Castle (2001) has an all star cast: Robert Redford (The Sting), the late James Gandolfini (The Sopranos), Mark Ruffalo (Now You See Me), Delroy Lindo (Gone In Sixty Seconds) and our old friend Kristen Shaw (she had to be there somewhere, it is a Rod Lurie film after all). That covers the ones I’ve heard of anyway 
The plot involves decorated a General (Redford) incarcerated in a military prison for disobeying orders. The Colonel (Gandolfini) running the jail may respect the General’s rank and achievements but he runs his establishment the way he sees fit. The General disagrees with the hard-line methods employed and organises a rebellion with his fellow inmates.
But Kathryn is not in The Last Castle, I hear you say. You are almost entirely correct. Ms. Morris did shoot a scene for the film but it was left out of the final cut. You can, however, find it as a deleted scene extra on the DVD release. Kathryn stars as a DOD (Department Of Defense) Investigator visiting the jail to interview a prison guard about an incident. With slicked down, short hair, military uniform and hint of a southern twang in her accident Kathryn asks questions the officer over a fatality he was involved in. The Colonel is also present in the room, the paying little attention. It totals 2 minutes in length.
On the DVD you can also watch the scene with a commentary by the director Rod Lurie. In it he describes the scene, is glowing in praise and admiration for Kathryn, and explains why the scene was cut (“because it decellerized the pace”) and the fact that what it would have achieved was covered elsewhere.
2001 was busy period for Kathryn, seeing the release of And Never Let Her Go, A.I. Artificial Intelligence, this, and her multi-episode arc on The Mind Of The Married Man.
So, there you have it. The Last Castle, a movie without Kathryn Morris in it. Now there’s an interesting new theme for KM UK that could massively increase the post count Instead of a “Media Alert” let’s call this a “No M’dear Alert”. As in: “Is Kathryn Morris in this film?” “No m’dear.”
